The Red Sox earned the game 1 win 8-7 behind a balanced offense with 6 different hitters driving in at least 1 run and 5 hitters scoring at least run. The Giants battled back in game 2, thanks to a solid performance on the mound by Bert Blyleven, pitching a shutout for 7 innings. The Red Sox scored 2 in the 8th, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback. Making the loss even more difficult, league MVP candidate Rod Carew suffered a 4 game injury in the middle of the 8th inning rally on a fly ball to the outfield. Springfield Redbirds (5) vs Portland Beavers (4) - Series tied 1-1 Springfield jumped out to an early lead in game 1, posting a quick 5-0 advantage over the first 3 innings for Jerry Koosman. Koosman spread out 11 hits and 3 BBs, stranding 9 Beavers in the 5-4 victory. Portland rebounded in game 2, blowing open a 2-2 game in the bottom of the 7th, plating 6 runs. The 6 run explosion was anchored by Bob Robertson's grand slam, giving winning pitcher Jim Palmer plenty of cushion to coast to the win. The Red Sox won games 3 and 4 handily, putting the Giants on the brink of elimination heading into game 5. Phoenix showed it's toughness from a season full of battles in the West in game 5, blowing out Pawtucket 10-4, refusing to end the season in front of their home fans. Bob Bailey and Jim Northrup powered the offense from the middle of the lineup combining for 5 hits, 4 RBI and 4 RS. Willie McCovey is leading the way for the Red Sox in the series, smashing 2 HRs, driving in 6 runs and hitting .333. Springfield Redbirds (5) vs Portland Beavers (4) - Springfield leads 3-2 The series heads back to Portland with the Beavers facing elimination. In a similar set of results to the other series, Springfield grabbed the 1st two games and then Portland fired back winning in a one sided game 5. The Beavers fended off elimination 8-1 thanks to a dominating performance by Jim Palmer and HRs by Willie Mays, Ted Savage and Greg Goossen. Springfield's Don Mincher leads the post season hitters with 4 HRs and is 6-12, scoring each time he has reached base. The Pelicans scored early and built a quick lead in game 1, opening up a 6 run gap after 4 innings. Sam McDowell struck out 9 and and had little problems closing out the game. Carl Yastrzemski homered and drove in 3 in the win. Game 2 was much closer, tied at 3 going into the home half of the 8th. Mickey Stanley tripled with the bases loaded and Felix Millan followed with a base hit to give the Pelicans a 3 run advantage, both hits coming with 2 outs. Steve Hargan finished off the Red Sox in the 9th to earn the complete game victory. Springfield Redbirds (5) vs Hawaii Islanders (1) - Series tied 1-1 Springfield and Hawaii split the opening 2 games of the series, both featuring late inning comebacks falling just short. Game 1 saw Springfield battle back from a 6 run deficit, scoring 4 runs over the 7th and 8th inning to draw to within 2 runs. Don Mincher came to the plate in the top of the 9th as the tying run, but the Redbirds 30 HR hitter came up empty, striking out with Billy Williams watching from 2nd base. In Game 2, the Redbirds posted a 5-2 lead in the 8th only to be put to the test in the bottom of the 9th. The Islanders loaded the bases with 1 out, with Bobby Bonds walking in a run and Tito Fuentes driving in a run on a ground out. The Pelicans scored 17 runs on 25 hits, in a 17-6 win. Every batter in the New Orleans lineup had at least 2 hits and scored a run. The 17 runs were generated on only 1 HR, by Ray Fosse, a 2 run shot in the 8th to finish the Pelicans scoring. The Red Sox Gary Nolan pitched a 2 hitter for a 3-0 win in game 3, and Fritz Peterson tossed a 10 inning complete game in a 5-4 game 5 Pawtucket victory. Springfield Redbirds (5) vs Hawaii Islanders (1) - Hawaii leads 3-2 Hawaii records solid 3 run wins in games 3 and 5, pushing the Redbirds to the brink of elimination. Springfield's only win at home needed bottom of the 9th heroics to secure the win. With the game tied 2-2 in the final inning, Richie Hebner delivered a walk-off HR and send the fans home happy. Hawaii is getting great post season performances from Willie Horton, Ollie Brown and Tony Perez, each with 4 RBIs so far. Injuries have hit hard in the semifinal round, Springfield has lost Al Kaline for 13 more games, New Orleans will be missing Ray Fosse for 7 games, and Hawaii will be playing without Larry Howard and Brant Alyea for 8 and 7 games respectively. Carl Yastrzemski drove in 6 runs for the Pelicans in the series averaging over 6 runs per game. Springfield Redbirds (5) vs Hawaii Islanders (1) - Springfield wins 4-3 Springfield bounces back from a 3-2 disadvantage winning back to back elimination games in Hawaii to upset the number 1 seed and advance to the World Series. Game 6 featured a 5 run 5th inning for the Redbirds to come back from a 3-1 deficit, finished off with a bases loaded double of off the bat of Tim McCarver. The lead was enough for Ron Klimkowski to pick up his 3rd win of the post season. Game 7 needed extra innings to be decided in a terrific game. Hawaii trailed 5-4 going into the 9th inning and rallied to tie the game on a 2 out single by Cito Gaston, driving in Ed Brinkman who led off the inning with a base hit. Islanders then loaded the bases and Tito Fuentes had a chance to win the series, but he came up empty with a harmless ground out. Springfield answered back immediately in the 10th, on a 2 out double by Pete Rose, scoring Paul Popovich and taking a 6-5 lead and plating the eventual winning run to advance to the Series.
