Winnipeg Whips (6) vs. Portland Beavers (3) – Series tied 1-1 Winnipeg and Portland split their opening two games. The Whips cruised to an easy 4-1 win in game 1, never trailing with Dave Roberts spinning a 5 hitter. Portland trailed until the 7th inning in game 2, finally taking their first lead of the series on Tom Haller's 2 run HR. Winnipeg tied the game in the top of the 8th, only to watch the Beavers push the go ahead run across the plate in the bottom half thanks to a Joe Lahoud base it. Toledo Mud Hens (5) vs Springfield Redbirds (4) - Series tied 1-1 Toledo and Springfield both walk away with wins in the first two games of their series. Toledo was victorious in game 1, with a 4-1 win, powered by Tom Seaver's 9 Ks and Jose Cruz's HR and 2 RS. The Redbirds evened the series with a 6-4 game 2 win. Springfield posted 3 runs in the 5th and never looked back thanks to Amos Otis' 4 SBs and 3 RS. Wild Card Series Games 3, 4, and 5Standings - www.stratomaticnation.com/sombb/1970kp/1971ps/standings1.htmlHighlights: Winnipeg Whips (6) vs. Portland Beavers (3) – WIN wins 4-1 Winnipeg dispatches Portland with 3 straight wins to advance to the semifinals. Game 3 was tied at 3 going into the 7th inning when Billy Conigliaro smashed a solo HR for the eventual GWRBI, his 2nd HR of the game. Steve Blass pitched a solid 8 innings for Winnipeg and Darold Knowles tossed a clean 9th inning for the save. The Whips won games 4 and 5 handily, building early leads and holding on in both games thanks to strong pitching. Tom Bradley sealed the series in game 5, allowing a lone single to Bernie Carbo in the 1st inning before retiring teh next 25 consecutive hitters, facing the minimum of 27 in the game. The Whips had 8 HRs in the 5 games. Portland struggled at the plate throughout the match-up, managing only 10 runs, averaging 2 runs per game. Toledo Mud Hens (5) vs Springfield Redbirds (4) - SPR leads 3-2 Springfield took advantage of the home field in games 3 and 4, posting 5-3 and 5-1 wins. Toledo rallied in game 5, with their backs to the wall facing elimination, the Hens jumped out to an early 3 run lead in the 2nd inning behind a HR by Joe Pepitone and a triple by Freddie Patek. The Redbirds evened the score in the 6th on a 3 run HR off of the bat of Ron Bloomberg. The lead was short lived with Toledo bouncing back in the bottom of the inning to score the game winning run on a solo HR by Al Oliver to keep their playoff hopes alive. Gene Clines went 3 for 3 in game 1, scoring twice from the leadoff spot and stirring the drink for the Whips. Dave Roberts chalked up his 3rd win of the playoffs on the mound, going 7 2/3 and getting help from Darold Knowles in relief. Game 2 was an exciting contest, tied at 4 after 9 innings. Winnipeg pushed ahead scoring 4 times in the 10th inning behind 5 hits, topped off by a 2 run double by Jim Fregosi to take a 2 games to none lead. Not everything was positive for the Whips though, losing MVP hopeful Hank Aaron for 4 games after an injury in his 1st at bat in game 1. Springfield Redbirds (4) vs Memphis Blues (2) - Series tied 1-1 The Redbirds opened up the series with an exciting 3-2 win in 11 innings to take over the home field advantage. The game was tied at 2 until the top of the 11th when Pete Rose drew a 2 out bases loaded walk to push the game winning run across the plate. Cy Young candidate Don Wilson pitched all 11 innings for the win, spreading out 10 hits and a walk, adding 8 Ks. Memphis was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning, the bottom half of the order going down 1-2-3. Ross Grimsley ended up with the loss even though he pitched 10 2/3 and only allowed 7 hits. Memphis took control of game 2 early, opening up a 4-1 lead in the 3rd inning on the way to a 6-1 win. Joe Coleman pitched a 7 hit complete game in the victory. The Blue offense was spread out evenly with 6 hitters driving in a run and 6 hitters each scoring a run. The Red Sox where able to fight off the sweep in game 4, topping the Whips 6-3, but they were not able to continue the momentum in game 5 with Winnipeg winning handily, 6-3, behind HRs from Merv Rettenmund and Mike Andrews. Winnipeg's balance of hitting and pitching has advanced them to the finals, as a team batting .293 with 13 HRs in 10 games averaging over 5 runs per games while allowing just over 3 runs per game. Springfield Redbirds (4) vs Memphis Blues (2) - SPR leads 3-2 Springfield rallies for back to back wins in games 4 and 5 to take the series lead. Games 3 and 4 were one sided affairs, the Blues dominating game 3 9-0 and the Redbirds coming out victorious in game 4, 3-0. Game 5 went 11 innings, ending on a walk off double by Amos Otis, driving in Mark Belanger for the Redbirds game winning run. 2B Tommy Helms went 3-4 in the game, scoring a run and driving in 2. The series goes back to Memphis for games 6 and 7 with the Blues facing elimination. The top of the Winnipeg lineup carried the day in game 1 with Merv Rettenmund, Davey Johnson, and Dick Allen all collecting 2 hits and at least 1 RBI. The Whips posted a 5-1 lead in the 5th inning which was plenty for Dave Roberts to pick up the victory. Game 2 went to extra innings tied after a Springfield rally in the bottom of the 8th that tied the game at 4. Winnipeg struck quickly in the 10th on a 2 run HR by Hank Aaron to take the lead, but Springfield fought back in the bottom of the inning. Al Kaline doubled to lead off the inning, and was driven in 2 batters later on a double by Ron Swoboda. Springfield led off the 9th with back to back singles by Al Kaline and Billy Williams, but stranded them both after Winnipeg put out the fire with closer Darold Knowles. With their back against the wall, the Redbirds rallied taking games 4 and 5, extending the series back home to Springfield for game 6. Game 5 was scoreless heading into the 8th inning and the Whips fans were ready to celebrate, but Bill Freehan launched a 2 out solo HR for the Redbirds to put them the lead. Springfield added an insurance run in the 9th giving Mel Stottlemyre the run support he needed to earn a CG victory. Springfield mounted a 2 out rally in the 9th, scoring 1 run and placing runners on 1st and 3rd before closer Darold Knowles was brought into the game to secure the win.
