Louisville Colonels (6) vs. Albuquerque Dukes (3) – ALB leads 2-0 Albuquerque came out on top with wins in the first 2 games of the series, 3-2 and 5-2 over Louisville. Both games were closely contested, with the difference being clutch hitting from the Dukes, who were outhit in both games. Manny Mota has 4 of the Dukes 8 RBIs and Bert Campaneris has 4 SBs in the 2 victories. Phoenix Giants (5) vs Toledo Mud Hens (4) - TOL leads 2-0 The Mud Hens win 2 close games, a pair of pitchers duels, 2-0 in game 1 and 3-2 in 14 innings in game 2. The Giants offense had a hard time finding their swing as Toledo's Steve Carlton and Tom Seaver had terrific back to back outings on the mound. Wild Card Series Games 3, 4 and 5Standings - www.stratomaticnation.com/sombb/1970kp/1972ps/standings1.htmlHighlights: Toledo advances, Albuquerque heads home up 3-2 Louisville Colonels (6) vs. Albuquerque Dukes (3) – ALB leads 3-2 Louisville bounced back from the 0-2 series deficit with a 3-0 shutout win behind the pitching of Claude Osteen in game 3, and a 7-1 run away win powered by a 5 run 8th inning, which included a bases loaded 2 out double from Carlos May. The Colonels had the momentum heading into game 5, until Don Sutton stepped on the mound in the bottom of the 1st inning and proceeded to spread out 4 hits over 9 innings on the way to a 4-1 complete game victory and Sutton's 2nd win of the series. Phoenix Giants (5) vs Toledo Mud Hens (4) - TOL wins 4-0 Toledo made short work of the opening round series, advancing with two wins at Phoenix in games 3 and 4. Game 3 followed suit from game 2 and was decided in extra innings, the Hens scoring the winning run in the top of the 11th on a 2 out base hit from Jim Breazeale, driving in Bobby Murcer. Game 4 was also close, tied at 3 going into the 8th inning, Toledo breaking the game open with 2 runs in the 8th and an insurance run in the 9th. Steve Carlton was in control most of the game, and recorded his 2nd win of the post season. Louisville put together a 2 out rally in the 9th inning, drawing to within 1 run on a base hit by Joe Rudi. Mike Epstein then stepped to the plate with runners on 1st and 3rd, but failed to get the ball out of the infield against Dukes reliever Rollie Fingers, ending the Colonels season. Sutton is 3-0 in the post season. Steve Busby was the story of game 2 pitching the Redbirds to a 3-1 victory, spinning a 3 hitter to even the series at 1-1. Toledo Mud Hens (4) vs. Richmond Braves (1) - series tied 1-1 Toledo and Richmond battled into extra inning in both games in Richmond, with the Braves taking game 1 5-4 in 10 innings and the Hens winning game 2 4-3 in 11 innings. Dal Maxvill knocked a base hit that pushed Carlton Fisk across the plate in the series opener after Fisk's double and a passed ball for the "W". Game 2 featured Sparky Lyle coming in after 9 innings in relief of Tom Seaver, helping the Hens secure the win. Lyle has 3 wins and a save in the Hens 6 games, allowing only 2 hits in 7 innings pitched with 10 Ks. Albuquerque booked an easy 4-0 in game 3, Springfield evened the series in game 4 in dramatic fashion, coming back from behind in the top of the 9th to win 7-6. Don Sutton led Albuquerque to the game 5 win, his 4th post season victory, but not before the Redbirds struck for 4 runs in the 5th to even the game at 4. The Dukes went ahead for good in the 6th on a Many Mota base hit. Springfield had bases loaded with no outs in the top of the 7th, but couldn't cash in, unable to mount any more offense in the final 2 innings. Toledo Mud Hens (4) vs. Richmond Braves (1) - TOL wins 4-1 Toledo returns home and sweeps #1 seeded Richmond to advance to the World Series. The Hens jumped out to early leads in games 3 and 5 on their way to easy wins. Game 4 was much closer, tied at 3 after 9 innings, but ended quickly after that on a 2 out HR in the bottom of the 10th by Steve Yeager. Toledo's pitching controlled the series, with a team ERA of 1.92, team WHIP of 1.17, and 86 Ks in 9 games, led by Steve Carlton and Sparky Lyle, each with 3 wins. Campaneris was the hero at the plate in the post season for Albuquerque, scoring 10 runs, batting .317, driving in 6 and stealing 17 bases. Don Sutton was the post season MVP, recording a perfect 6-0 record in 6 GS with 6 CGs, booking a 1.31 ERA and 0.69 WHIP.
