Phoenix broke open a 2-2 tie in the top of the inning on back to back solo HRs by Paul O'Neill and Ken Griffey Jr. only to have Chicago strike back in the bottom of the inning, plating 3 runs while sending 8 batters to the plate in the rally. The GWRBI came off the bat of Mike Huff as he delivered a 2 out base hit, scoring Shane Mack. Phoenix evened the series in game 2 behind a terrific 6 hit, 11 strikeout complete game from David Cone. Griffey went 2-5 driving in 2 runs in support of Cone. Montreal Canadiens (5) vs Oakland Sky Sox (4) - series tied 1-1 The Canadiens/Sox series opened with a pair of one sided games highlighted with big 5th innings in both match-ups. Oakland took the lead in the 5th inning of game 1, scoring 3 runs on a two out 3 run HR by Mark McGwire. McGwire made Montreal pay for intentionally walking Jose Canseco just ahead of the game winning blast. In game 2, Montreal posted a 5 run 5th on the way to a 7-3 victory. Kevin Bass put an exclamation poing on the scoring in the inning, crushing a grand slam to put the game away for the Canadiens. Wild Card Series Games 3, 4 and 5Standings - www.stratomaticnation.com/sombb/1994auction/1994ps/standings1.htmlHighlights: Both road teams gain a split and take home field advantage, Phoenix Pine Tar (6b) vs. Chicago Black Hawks (3) – CHI leads 3-2 Chicago dominated game 3 and grabbed back the series momentum with an 18-4 win. The Hawks penciled 19 hits into the scorecard powered by Travis Fryman's 5-6 day at the plate, with 5 RBI, 5 RS, and 2 HRs. Phoenix rebounded in game 4, earning a 10 inning walkoff win in game 4 to even the series. The rubber match of the 3 games in Phoenix was won by Chicago, holding off a late charge by the Pine Tar. The Hawks led the entire game, carrying a 7-1 lead into the bottom of the 8th inning, when the Phoenix bats woke up and posted 5 runs to draw to within a run. The Pine Tar had 6 consecutive hits in the inning, including a HR, a triple, and 2 doubles before the bats fell silent with the game tying runner on base. Montreal Canadiens (5) vs Oakland Sky Sox (4) - OAK leads 3-2 Oakland wins games 4 and 5 to take a 3-2 advantage over Oakland, winning a dramatic game 5, scoring runs in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings. The comeback was capped off in the top of the 9th with HRs by Mark McGwire and Bob Boone. McGwire is batting .421 with 6 RBI for the Sky Sox after 5 games. Montreal has their backs up against the wall now, heading back to Oakland facing elimination. Chicago rallied late in game 6 to come back from a 4 run deficit in the 9th inning, scoring 3 runs placing a runner on 3rd base before with 2 outs, before losing 7-6. Phoenix kept the momentum going into game 7 and gained the lead in the 4th inning, and never looked back, recording a 5-1 win to move onto the semifinal round of the playoffs. Montreal Canadiens (5) vs Oakland Sky Sox (4) - OAK wins 4-3 Montreal won game 6 handily behind a complete game 6 hitter from John Smiley to set up game 7 in Oakland. Montreal score 2 in the 5th to tie the game at 3 and then went ahead for good in the 7th scoring 3 runs on bases loaded walks. Oakland never trailed in game 7, scoring in the 1st on a solo HR from David Justice and then plating the eventual game winning run in the bottom of the 2nd on a sacrifice fly by Bob Boone. Andy Ashby went 7 1/3 innings to pick up his 3rd post season win in 3 starts in the 6-1 series clinching win. Both games were very close, Bayside establishing early leads and hanging on with strong pitching. Greg Maddux outlasted David Cone in game 1, pitching a complete game 4 hitter, supported at the plate by a Frank Thomas HR and 2 RBI day at the plate. In game 2, both teams generated a little more offense, but once again the Biddies pitching took control after the bats put up a 4-0 run by the bottom of the 3rd inning. Jim Bullinger went 8 innings in the win and Vinnie Castilla went 2-4 at the plate with a HR and 2 RBI. Oakland Sky Sox (4) vs Greenbow, AL Knee Clubbers (2) - OAK leads 2-0 Oakland surprised Greenbow in both games of a road sweep for the Sky Sox. Oakland posted crooked numbers in 4 of the innings in game 1, blowing out the Knee Clubbers 13-3. David Justice and Mark McGwire led the way for Oakland, each smashing a HR. Justice knocked in 3 runs in the game, McGwire scored 3 runs. Game 2 was more competitive early, before Oakland plated 6 runs in the 5th inning to take a 5 run lead en route to a 9-6 win. Jose Canseco was 2 for 3 at the plate, including a triple, 3 RBI and 2 RS. Greenbow has their work cut out for them heading into Oakland for games 3, 4, and 5. Game 4 ended up being the most competitive of the matchup, lasting 10 innings in Greg Maddux's 2nd post season "W". The game winning run was delivered on a bases loaded 2 out walk to Jeff Bagwell, scoring Omar Vizquel who had reached base on a base on balls earlier in the inning. Oakland Sky Sox (4) vs Greenbow, AL Knee Clubbers (2) - OAK leads 3-2 Games 3, 4, and 5 were all close matchups, Greenbow fighting off elimination in game 5 to send the series back to Alabama. Greenbow earned victory in game 3 after scoring 3 runs in the 6th and holding off a 9th inning rally from the Sky Sox in the 3-2 win. Oakland took the series to must win for Greenbow after an 8-7 game 4 win that featured a 5 run 3rd inning for the Sox, Jose Canseco's 4th HR of the playoffs, and Andy Ashby's 5th victory in 5 post season starts. Greenbow was able to force a game 7 with a 7-4 win at home in game 6 on the bat of Danny Tartabull's 2 HRs. Game 7 was a classic, featuring a bottom of the 9th rally and an explosive final inning to decide the series. Greenbow trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs, when Tino Martinez stepped to the plate a crushed a solo HR to send the game into extra innings. The Sox wouldn't be denied a victory though, scoring 5 runs in the top of the 11th to put the game on ice. The runs came on a combination of 3 singles, 3 walks, and 2 wild pitches. Bayside was in control of games 3 and 5 thanks to early leads, game 4 was Oakland's best chance to take a game at home. The teams were never separated by more than a run until the final inning, but the Sox weren't able to establish a lead against Greg Maddux. Maddux ended the post season with a 4-0 record for the Biddies. Frank Thomas was the hero at the plate for Bayside in the post season, leading the Biddies in HRs, RBI, Runs, and BBs.
