The Braves controlled game 1 behind 4 HRs and a complete game from Doc Ellis for 6-1 win. Game 2 went to Syracuse 7-2, powered by Willie Stargell's 2 HRs. Charleston Charlies(5) vs Phoenix Giants (4) - PHX leads 2-0 Phoenix gained the early momentum taking game 1 in a pitchers duel, a 1-0 victory over Charleston. Bert Blyleven pitched 8 shutout innings, allowing 7 hits and chalking up 3 Ks. The lone run was driven in by Bob Watson in the bottom of the 3rd, proving to be the game winning score. Carl Yastrzemski led off the 9th for the Charlies, reaching 2nd base before getting stranded there by Phoenix closer Ramon Hernandez. Phoenix scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 1st in game 2, giving starting pitcher Fred Beene plenty of cushion in the way to a 7-2 complete game win. Wild Card Series Games 3, 4 and 5Standings - www.stratomaticnation.com/sombb/1970kp/1973ps/standings1.htmlHighlights: Richmond Braves (6) vs. Syracuse Chiefs (3) – RCH leads 3-2 Richmond and Syracuse continue to play one-sided games, the Braves getting the best of it in game 5 to take a 3-2 series lead. Dock Ellis is 2-0 in his two starts for the Braves and teammate Denny Doyle is tearing it up at the plate, 10-22 so far leading all series hitters. Willie Stargell is providing most of the Chiefs offense, knocking 3 HRs, all solo shots. The series is getting chippy, 5 Braves batters have been hit (1 Chief), including Carlton Fisk and Reggie Jackson, both twice. Jackson wasn't able to continue after either plunking, missing games 3 and 4, and out for game 6. Don Baylor and Paul Blair are out due to HBPs for the rest of the series, and Doug Griffin was injured for 15 games legging out a ground ball. Charleston Charlies(5) vs Phoenix Giants (4) - PHX wins 4-1 Charleston was able to dig their heels in for a 9-5 win in game 3, but was dominated in games 4 and 5 by Phoenix on the way to the Giants series win. Bert Blyleven pitched 8 1/3 innings of shutout ball in his 2nd series start / win in game 4, helping the Giants to a 2-0 victory. The clinching game 5 was a blowout as the Giants plated 20 runs, including 6 in the 3rd and 7 in the 4th innings. Dave Roberts knocked in 7 more runs, giving him 14 in the series, just 3 less than Charleston was able to score in all 5 games. The Chiefs, facing elimination, battled back with runs crossing the plate in the 6th and 7th innings to tie the game at 3-3. The Braves substitutes proved to be the difference in the game in the 9th inning as Denny Doyle reached base with a 2 out single, followed by a Willie Montanez blast to seal the win for Richmond. The Braves are eager to move on from the bean ball filled match-up, game 6 delivered 3 more hit batsmen and a 2 game injury for 1B Nate Colbert. Richmond Braves (6) vs. Louisville Colonels (1) – RCH leads 2-0 Dock Ellis and J.R. Richard silenced the Louisville bats, pitching complete games and allowing just 4 runs in the opening 2 games. The offensive momentum from the Colonels 1000+ run season didn't carry into the opening games of their post season. To add insult to injury, Louisville loses 33 HR / 99 RBI Bill Robinson to a 4 game injury in game 1. Phoenix Giants (4) vs. Albuquerque Dukes (2) - PHX leads 2-0 Bert Blyleven pitched a 6 hit complete game in the opening contest on the way to a Giants 15-1 blowout victory. Blyleven is 3-0 for the Giants in the post season, receiving great support at the plate with every batter recording a hit, led by Dave May who went 4 for 4 with 4 runs scored. Game 2 was a more competitive game, with Phoenix getting out to an early lead and holding on for a 5-2 win. Albuquerque rallied in he bottom of the 8th, scoring 2 runs, but fell short of tying the game leaving runners on 1st and 3rd. The Braves jumped out to an early lead in game 3, scoring in 4 of the first 6 innings, giving starting pitcher Harry Parker the offense needed in a 4-0 win. Louisville's hall of fame offense continued to struggle in game 4, only pushing a single run across the plate against winning pitcher Luis Tiant. The Colonels averaged a meager 1.25 runs per game in the 4 post season games, compared to the 6.26 runs per game in the regular season. Richmond's dominating series win advances them to their 1st World Series of the decade. Phoenix Giants (4) vs. Albuquerque Dukes (2) - PHX wins 4-0 Phoenix earns their first World Series appearance of the decade, sweeping Albuquerque in 4 games. Game 3 was an 8-2 one-sided victory, powered at the plate by Dave Roberts 3-4, 4 RBI day. Roberts finished the semifinals with 22 RBI over the first 2 rounds. Game 3 was his 4 game in the playoffs with 4 or more RBI. Game 4 was a nail-biter, coming down to a bottom of the 9th walk off double by Bob Watson. Roberts smacked a grand slam and a 3 run HR in the game. Richmond fought off elimination in game 4, eeking out a bottom of the 9th win, scoring 4 runs, capped by a 2 out 3 run bomb from Rick Monday. Phoenix made short work of the Braves in game 5 to raise the championship trophy in an 11-6 win. The Giants never trailed, scoring 2 runs in the 1st inning, followed by 9 more over the remaining 8 innings. Roberts went 3-5 with another RBI to end the post season with .436 AVG, 5 HRs and 32 RBI.
