: Syracuse continues their winning ways, winning 6 in a row including a sweep of Phoenix, knocking the Giants into 2nd place in the West behind Portland. The Chiefs now have a double digit lead in the North. Louisville's Mike Schmidt had 4 HRs and 14 RBI this week raising his totals to 21 and 78 respectively. Schmidt is tied for 2nd in RBI, just one behind Winnipeg's Dick Allen. Schmidt's big day of the week came on 8/1 when he smacked 3 HRs and drove in 9, including a grand slam, in a 13-4 win over Springfield. Syracuse pitching teammates Jim Barr and Phil Niekro both recorded their 18th wins this week for the league leading Chiefs. : Phoenix and Portland are still in a dead heat in the West, double digit leads in the North and South continue. Hawaii trails Springfield by 1.5 games for the last wild card spot. Louisville's Mike Schmidt is 14 for his last 31 with 3 HRs (32) and 11 RBI (103) to reach the 100 RBI mark and is now tied with Syracuse's Darrell Evans who had an 11 game 0 RBI streak. Schmidt is also just 3 runs short of 100 RS, and has passed the century mark in K's with 130. Schmidt also picked up his 3rd grand slam of the season on 9/8 in a 14-4 win over Memphis. Louisville now has 3 players with multiple grand slams and leads all teams with 11 for the season. Memphis' Lou Brock stole his 100th base on 9/5 for the Blues. Phoenix's Bert Blyleven has won 3 straight and 10 of his last 11 starts to spring to the lead in victories with 23, 1 more than Syracuse's Jim Barr and Phil Niekro. Blyleven also leads in strikeouts with 274 and has two separate 14 strikeout outings. Portland's Fergie Jenkins has quietly pulled into the Cy Young discussion, leading all pitchers with a 0.96 WHIP, and in the top 5 in wins and ERA.
