Wild Card Series Games 1 and 2Standings - www.stratomaticnation.com/sombb/1970kp/1974ps/standings1.htmlHighlights: Springfield Redbirds (6) vs. Phoenix Giants (3) – PHX leads 2-0 Phoenix wins both games at home in two very close contests. Game 1 ended on a 10th inning 2 out walk-off base hit by Bob Watson, driving in Greg Luzinski with the game winning run in the 2-1 victory. Bert Blyleven went the distance allowing 2 hits and striking out 7. Game 2 was anyone's game, scoreless into the bottom of the 8th when Bobby Grich smacked a single to drive in Ed Herrmann with the games only run. Buzz Capra matched Blyleven's game 1 2 hit performance, pitching the 9 inning complete game. Louisville Colonels (5) vs Portland Beavers (4) - series tied 1-1 Portland and Louisville competed in completely different games than the other series, both high scoring games, each walking away with a win. Portland opened up a lead in the bottom of the first inning in game 1 on solo HRs by Buddy Bradford and Ron Fairly. Louisville fought back and tied the game in the 5th on a solo HR by Jeff Burroughs, only to see the Beavers open up the lead in the bottom of the inning scoring 4 runs in a 9 batter inning, eventually winning the game 8-4. Louisville earned a split in game 2, breaking open a 6-6 tie in the top of the 9th thanks to a 3 run HR by grand slam king Burroughs. Ken Holtzman picked up the complete game victory, allowing only 1 ER out of the 6 scored by the Beavers. Wild Card Series Games 3, 4, and 5Standings - www.stratomaticnation.com/sombb/1970kp/1974ps/standings1.htmlHighlights: Springfield Redbirds (6) vs. Phoenix Giants (3) – PHX leads 3-2 Springfield fights off elimination after falling behind 3 games to none, winning games 4 and 5 to extend the series. Game 4 started the momentum swing for the Redbirds, pulling out a win with runs in the 8th and 9th inning to take the lead after trailing 2-0. The 8th inning runs finally ignited the Springfield offense, which carried over to a 9 run explosion in game 5 on the way to a 9-6 victory. Phoenix was 6 outs way from advancing in game 4, and are looking to change the tide when the series returns home for game 6. Louisville Colonels (5) vs Portland Beavers (4) - POR leads 3-2 Portland grabbed back the home field advantage after splitting the opening games by winning games 3 and 4, 2-1 and 4-0. Game 4 went 11 innings and was decided by a 2 out double by Bobby Tolan, driving in Bernie Carbo for the winning run. Carbo reached base on an error and stole 2nd base to be in position to score. Louisville had their backs up against the wall in game 5, plating the game winning run in the bottom of the 9th, a lead-off solo HR by none other than Jeff Burroughs. Wild Card Series Games 6 and 7Standings - www.stratomaticnation.com/sombb/1970kp/1974ps/standings1.htmlHighlights: Springfield Redbirds (6) vs. Phoenix Giants (3) – SPR wins 4-3 Springfield comes all the way back from being down 3 games to none to advance to the semifinals. The Redbirds dominated game 6 winning 8-4 powered by 13 hits, at least 1 from every batter in the lineup. Springfield batted around and scored 4 in the 4th inning and never looked back. In game 7, SP Jim Rooker allowed just 2 hits going into the bottom of the 7th, supported by a 4-0 lead before the Giants finally broke through, scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th on a 2 out single by Chris Speier cutting the Redbirds lead in half. Mike Garman was brought in to relieve Rooker and shut down Phoenix for the rest of the game to complete the 4 epic game comeback. Springfield heads to Richmond with a ton of momentum. Louisville Colonels (5) vs Portland Beavers (4) - POR wins 4-2 Portland didn't give Louisville a chance for a Redbirds like comeback, closing out the series in game 6 in a back and forth 6-5 victory. The game was tied entering the bottom of the 8th at 5-5 when Gene Tenace stepped up and popped a solo HR to score the series clinching run. Tenace was 2-4 in the game, scoring twice and driving in 1 run on the solo round tripper. Portland will face Syracuse in the semifinals. Rick Monday smashed a grand slam in game 1, leading the Braves to an 8-3 victory. Dave Winfield had 2 HRs and all 3 Springfield RBIs in the loss. Game 2 was scoreless through 6 when both teams finally but numbers on the board, Springfield scored twice on RBI singles from Billy Williams and Amos Otis, and Richmond answering in the bottom of the inning plating 4 runs including the game winning run on a double off of the bat of Carlton Fisk. The Redbirds scored a run in the 7th but wasn't able to break through again thanks to a solid performance from the Braves bullpen. Portland Beavers (4) vs. Syracuse Chiefs (2) - series tied 1-1 Syracuse and Portland battled for 11 innings in game 1, with Darrell Evans ending the game with a single swing of the bat, knocking a solo HR for a 3-2 win. Phil Neikro picked up the "W" pitching all 11 innings, Fergie Jenkins was saddled with the loss, going the distance, 10 1/3 innings. Portland posted a big lead early in game 2, building a 4-0 lead after a 3 run top of the 4th. Syracuse was able to scratch together 2 runs in the bottom of the inning, but it wasn't enough as the Beavers went on to win 5-2 evening the series. Ron Fairly had 2 RBI and Tommy John pitched 8 strong innings for Portland. The Redbirds fought until the end, coming back from a 2 run deficit in the bottom of the 9th to gain a win and force a game 5 in the most exciting game of the semifinal round. Amos Otis cracked a 2 out bases loaded double to send the fans home happy. Richmond got back on track in game 5, breaking open a 0-0 tie in the 8th inning on a Marty Perez RBI triple and Willie Montanez RBI single to secure the win and a spot in the World Series. Rick Monday led the Braves at the plate with 5 RBI in the semifinal matchup. Portland Beavers (4) vs. Syracuse Chiefs (2) - SYR wins 4-1 The Chiefs land in Portland and sweep the Beavers to win the series in 5 games. Game 3 featured a 6 run 8th inning for Syracuse to give them a 5 run lead and the Chiefs couldn't be slowed down for the rest of the remaining games. Syracuse got great pitching performances from Phil Niekro and Jim Barr in games 4 and 5, winning 4-2 and 2-1 respectively. Darrell Evans had 2 HRs and 5 RBI against Portland who only managed to score 3 runs over the final 18 innings. World Series Games 1 and 2Standings - www.stratomaticnation.com/sombb/1970kp/1974ps/standings1.htmlHighlights: Syracuse Chiefs (2) vs. Richmond Braves (1) – RCH leads 2-0 Richmond continues their regular season dominance (8-1) over Syracuse taking games 1 and 2 at home. Richmond blew open game 1 in the bottom of the 8th inning, scoring 7 runs and turning a 2-1 game into a laugh-er. The Braves batted around in the inning, Doug Griffin highlighted the scoring with a bases loaded triple. Jim Kaat pitched a 5 hitter, striking out 7 for the win. Kaat is 2-0 in the post season. Game 2 featured a terrific pitchers duel between Jim Baar and Ken Brett, each pitching a complete game, Brett coming out on top 1-0. Brett whiffed 7 and allowed 5 hits, getting the game winning run off of the bat of Carlton Fisk in the 2nd inning. Fisk's lead-off solo HR was the only blemish on Baar's line-score for the day, 4 hits, 1 BB and 4 Ks in the loss. Syracuse had their chances in game 3, going into the 9th inning tied at 2 before giving up back to back solo HRs to Cesar Cedeno and Rick Monday. Dock Ellis held the Chiefs to 5 hits, collecting the complete game win. The Braves grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 2nd inning of game 4 and never relinquished it, ending with a 4-1 victory. Carlton Fisk knocked his 3rd post season HR and collected his 7th RBI for Richmond while Jim Kaat notched his 3rd post season win.
