Randy Jones went the distance on the mound, spreading 7 hits and allowing just 1 run. Game 2 had plenty of hitting, with both teams pairing up to log 20 hits, in a 5-3 Dukes win. Garry Matthews knocked a HR and had 2 RBIs for Albuquerque, Don Sutton pitched a complete game to pick up the victory. Toledo Mud Hens (5) vs Louisville Colonels (4) - LOU leads 2-0 Louisville gets 2 strong pitching performances at home to take the opening 2 games of the series. Jon Matlack tossed a 5 hitter in game 1 on the way to a 3-1 win, with the offense coming from HRs by Oscar Gamble and Bill Robinson. Burt Hooton matched Matlack's outing with a 6 hitter in game 2, 2-1 powered by a GWRBI double from Robinson. Tom Seaver and Steve Carlton both pitched good games for the Hens, with their offenses falling short. Bob Bailey laced a 2 run base hit in game 4 to secure a 5-4 win. Game 5 was decided in 10 innings on a 2 out single off of the bat of Brian Downing. Dukes closer Rollie Fingers was charged with a blown save and the loss in both of the final 2 games. Toledo Mud Hens (5) vs Louisville Colonels (4) - TOL leads 3-2 Toledo battles back and wins all 3 games at home to take the series lead, 3 games to 2. The Hens rotation continued to deliver after losing well pitched games 1 and 2, tossing 3 great outings. Gary Nolan, Tom Seaver and Steve Carlton combined to allow just 5 runs in the 3 games, including a 5-0 shutout for Seaver in game 3. Game 4 was decided in the bottom of the 9th when Dan Thomas delivered a walk-off 1 out base hit, driving in Davey Lopes for a 3-2 victory. Game 6 featured an exciting come from behind victory for the Colonels, rallying for 5 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to take a 9-5 lead forcing a game 7. Steve Garvey went 3 for 5, driving in 4 and scoring 3 runs. Ken Sanders picked up the win pitching 2 scoreless innings, striking out 3. The Colonels took control of game 7 early, scoring twice in the bottom of the 1st and never looking back on the way to a 6-3 win. Mike Schmidt and Bill Robinson both smacked 2 run HRs and Jon Matlack pitched a solid 8 1/3 innings for the win. Bob Bailey drove in 2 runs on a 3rd inning HR giving Jones plenty of room to spin his 2 hitter. Springfield evened the series in game 2, rallying int he bottom of the 9th to claim a 3-2 win. Tied at 2 going into the bottom of the 9th, Dave Winfield singled with 1 out and then proceeded to steal 2nd and advance to 3rd on a throwing error by catcher Ron Pruitt. Pete Rose then stepped into the batters box and plated Winfield on a base hit. Louisville Colonels (4) vs Richmond Braves (2) - RCH leads 2-0 Richmond's Ken Brett and John Montefusco dominate the opening 2 games of the series, both pitching 5 hit shutouts to give the Braves a 2 games to none lead. Brett collected a 2-0 win in game 1 behind 2-out RBIs from Cesar Cedeno and Buck Martinez. Montefusco picked up 3 runs in support of his shutout win from a solo HR off of the bat of Rick Monday and a 2 out 2 run base hit from Doug Rader. Phoenix's Bob Bailey smacked his 2nd HR of the series and drove in 2 to go along with battery mate Bob Apodaca and his complete game 6 hitter. The Redbirds evened the series in game 4, 4-1 behind HRs from Bill Plummer and Bill Freehan and a 3 inning save from Fred Holdsworth. Phoenix jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game 5 allowing Ed Figueroa to spread out 11 hits, while striking out 10, in a 5-3 win. Bailey had 2 more HRs and drove in all 5 runs in the victory. Louisville Colonels (4) vs Richmond Braves (2) - RCH leads 3-2 Richmond rallied in the 9th inning of game 3 to pull out a come from behind win, 4-3 thanks to a 2-out 2 run HR from Reggie Jackson. J.R. Richard allowed just 6 hits in the complete game outing. Facing a sweep in game 4, Louisville scored 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning, only to be matched in the top of the second by Richmond. The Colonels grabbed the lead back for good in the bottom of the 3rd on a George Foster RBI single. Jon Matlack was able to keep the Braves from crossing the plate the rest of the way after the rough start to earn the win and keep Louisville alive. Richmond also held off elimination in game 5 thanks to a 3 hit shutout by Burt Hooton. Hooton dominated on the mound and got all of the runs he needed in the 5th on a 3 run HR by Joe Morgan. The Giants scored 2 runs in the 3rd inning on a combination of a single, 3 walks and 2 errors, which proved to be enough runs for Grant Jackson who spread out 7 hits in the complete game win. The victory was Jackson's 1st of the post season, setting up the Giants to continue their surprising run to the finals. Louisville Colonels (4) vs Richmond Braves (2) - RCH wins 4-3 The South division rivals took the series to game 7 after Louisville fended off elimination in game 6 cruising to an 8-5 win, posting 4 runs on a grand slam by Mike Schmidt in the top of the first. The Colonels offense was silenced in the series deciding game 7 by John Momtefusco, holding them to just a single run on 5 hits and 5 walks. Richmond scored in 5 of their 8 turns at the plate on their way to a 7-1 win. Rick Monday went 2 for 3 on the day with a HR and 3 RBIs, Cesar Cedeno when 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored. Phoenix was down to their final out in game 6, trailing 6-4 with runners on 1st and 2nd facing J.R. Richard when they strung together 4 consecutive walks to take the lead and force a game 7. In the final game, things looked bleak for Phoenix, losing Reggie Smith to injury in the 1st and Richmond grabbing the early lead in the bottom of the 2nd on a Tom Paciorek base hit. The Giants battled back, tying the game in the 4th on a sac fly by Grich and going ahead in the 8th on a solo blast from Bob Watson. Richmond had one last chance to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th, Willie Montanez opened the inning with a single, Al Bumbry pinch ran and stole 2nd only to be stranded there by Randy Jones who proceeded to retire the final 3 batters to record his 6th post season win and the championship for the Giants.
