The Hens Bobby Murcer led all hitters in RBI in both games, collecting 6 in total, supporting great outings on the mound from Steve Carlton and Tom Seaver. Carlton spread out 7 hits in game 1, Seaver allowed just 3 in the second game. Phoenix Giants (5) vs Pawtucket Red Sox (4) - series tied 1-1 The teams combined for 18 runs in game 1, an 11-7 win for Phoenix, led by Bob Watson's 2 HRs, 3 RBI, and 3 RS. Bert Blyleven ate up 8 2/3 innings allowing 11 hits and 7 runs for the win. Ken Kravec silenced the Giants bats in game 2, pitching 8 shutout innings in a 2-0 win for the Red Sox. Kravec allowed just 4 hits before being giving up a leadoff hit in the 9th and getting relieved by Bob Apodaca to pick up the save. Andre Thornton delivered the game winning RBI in the 6th with a 2 out single. Wild Card Series Games 3, 4, and 5Standings - www.stratomaticnation.com/sombb/1970kp/1977ps/standings1.htmlHighlights: Syracuse Chiefs (6) vs. Toledo Mud Hens (3) – TOL wins 4-0 Toledo completes the sweep ending the Chiefs playoff run as quickly as it started. Syracuse's best chance to pick up a victory was game 3, a 9-8 contest with the Chiefs scoring 2 runs and loading the bases in the bottom of the 9th before running out of outs. Steve Carlton had 2 terrific outings for the Hens, spreading out 3 runs, 12 hits and 4 walks over 17 innings, picking up the win in both games. At the plate, Bobby Murcer led the way batting .467 and driving in 7 runs, including 2 GWRBI. Phoenix Giants (5) vs Pawtucket Red Sox (4) - PHX leads 3-2 Phoenix wins 2 of 3 at home and takes the series lead after 5 games. Bert Blyleven has 2 of the Giants 3 wins, including a pivotal 5-2 win in game 4 putting Pawtucket in the brink of elimination. The Red Sox fought back in game 5 to extend the series back to their home park, breaking open a 6-6 game in the top of the 9th to earn the 9-6 win. While game 5 was the most exciting of the 3 games, game 3 had plenty to watch as the teams combined for 29 runs in an 18-11 Giants win. Greg Luzinski was the star of the game, going 4 for 5 with 3 RBI and 4 RS. Louisville was 2 innings away for losing game 2, down 5 runs going into the bottom of the 8th when the Colonels bats woke up to the tune of 6 runs. George Foster smacked a 2 run HR, Brooks Robinson had a bases loaded 3 run double, and Larry Hisle pushed Robinson across the plate with a GWRBI single. Phoenix Giants (5) vs Hawaii Islanders (1) - series tied 1-1 Hawaii's Frank Tanana whiffed 10 in an opening game 2-1 loss to Phoenix's Bert Blyleven. The Giants scored the game winning run on an HR off of the bat of Greg Luzinski in the 8th inning. Hawaii rallied for a run in the bottom of the 9th on a lead-off HR by George Hendrick, then stranded a runner on 3rd base on the final out of the ball game. The Islanders blew open a 3-2 game in the 5th inning of game 2, scoring 5 runs and opening up an insurmountable lead on the way to a 7-5 win. 5 different hitters had an RBI for Hawaii, lead by Garry Maddox's 3-5 day at the plate with a run scored and 2 RBI. Toledo evened the series in game 4 in a 6-5 victory decided by a bottom of the 9th passed ball that allowed Roger Freed to score from 3rd. Mike Flanagan and Tom Seaver matched up for a pitcher's duel in game 5 with Flanagan picking up the win with 8 innings of shutout ball. Toledo rallied in the 9th, down 2-0, with Gary Carter leading off the inning with a HR before the Colonels bullpen took control for the final 3 outs. Phoenix Giants (5) vs Hawaii Islanders (1) - HAW leads 3-2 Hawaii wins 2 of 3 on the road and takes a 3-2 series lead over Phoenix. The Islanders blew out the Giants in game 3 10-0 behind a complete game shutout from Pat Torrealba and 2 HRs and 5 RBI from Bobby Bonds. Phoenix tied the series in game 4 thanks to a thrilling bottom if the 12th rally to win 7-5 on a HR by Merv Rettenmund. Hawaii took back the series advantage in game 5 8-4 powered by 2 HRs from George Hendrick bringing his post season total to 4 HRs in 5 games. George Hendrick walked with 2 outs and Bobby Bonds followed with an RBI double to push Hendrick across the plate with the game winning run. The game remained tied into the bottom of the 11th, when Jeff Burroughs stepped into the batters box and delivered a 2 run walk off HR. The offense picked up in game 4 for the Colonels in the first inning, the Colonel's batting around and scoring 5 runs behind HRs from Joe Morgan and George Foster.
