Game 1 was decided in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the 13th, the difference in the game being made by Dom Dimaggio who had the GWRBI base hit, driving in Bobby Doerr for the 3-2 win. The Padre's carried the momentum into game 2, scoring 5 in the 1st and never looking back on the way to a 9-3 win. 7 Padres scored a run in the game and Bill Nicholson led at the plate with a HR and 3 RBI. #5 Portland Beavers vs #4 Baltimore Orioles - POR leads 2-0 Portland storms into Baltimore and flips the home field advantage, winning both games. The Beaver's claimed an early lead in game 1, opening up a 5-0 advantage after the 1st inning. Jimmy Outlaw paced the Beavers with 3 RBI and Art Houtteman whiffed 2 in the 9th to pick up teh save. Game 2 was a 1 run contest going into the 9th when Del Ennis launched a 3 run HR to give the Beavers a 2-0 series lead heading back home to Portland. After losing game 3, Kansas City faced elimination in game 4 and battled into extra innings, finally recording a win in the bottom of the 11th on a walk off walk by Carl Schieb. The winning run pushed across the plate after 4 consecutive walks from Allie Reynolds. The Blues reprieve was short lived as the Padres claimed the lead in the 3rd inning of game 5 and never looked back, winning 7-4, Bobby Doerr had a 5 for 5 day with a HR, double, 2 RBI and 3 RS. #5 Portland Beavers vs #4 Baltimore Orioles - POR leads 3-2 Home field advantage was negated in games 3 and 4 as it was in the first 2 games of the series, with Baltimore leveling the series with 8-2 and 8-5 victories. Portland grabbed back the series lead in game 5, going ahead in the 7th inning after trailing the entire game. Jimmy Outlaw walked driving in the game tying run and Sam Vico plated the eventual game winning run on a sacrifice fly. The series heads back to Baltimore for game 6 with the Orioles facing elimination. Game 1 was decided in the 13th inning, 4-3. Mike McCormick lead off the inning with a walk and was advances to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Jim Russell. Phil Masi stepped up to the dish next and delivered the game winning hit, a double to drive in McCormick. Ted Williams had a HR and all 3 RBI for the Padres in the loss. Game 2 featured more offense from both teams and went into the 9th inning tied at 6. George McQuinn launched 2 HRs for San Diego to help them claim an early lead, but the Stars battled back and came through in the final half of the 9th on a pair of walks to Joe Gordon and Earl Torgeson, followed by a game winning single off of the bat of Ken Keltner. #5 Portland Beavers vs #1 Columbus Red Birds - COL leads 2-0 Two very different ballgames to begin the the semifinal series between Portland and Columbus, the Red Birds coming out victorious in both and taking a 2-0 series lead. Columbus grabbed an early lead scoring 3 runs in the 2nd inning and never looked back on the way to an 11-2 win. Willie Jones hit 2 HRs and drove in 3 runs to give winning pitcher Johnny Sain the support needed for the victory. Sain spread out 10 hits stranding 8 Beavers on the base-paths. Game 2 was a closely contested matchup that was tied at 3 going into the final inning. Portland scored a go ahead run in the top of the inning on a 2-out single from Johnny Outlaw and went into the bottom of the 9th with a series split in reach. Columbus quickly did away with the Beavers hopes, loading the bases on back to back to back singles by Duke Snider, Eddie Miller and Gil Hodges. The game tying run was pushed across the plate on a walk by Eddie Stanky, followed by a game winning base hit by Harry Walker. The Padres showed signs of life in game 3, winning 15-4, but the Stars cooled off the Padres offense in games 4 and 5 to earn their place in the finals. Game 4 featured a combined 6 hitter from Bob Lemon and Clyde Shoun, winning 5-1. Game 5 was a much closer contest, San Diego taking a 4-2 lead into the 7th inning when the Stars rallied and scored 3 runs on a blast off of the bat of Joe Gordon. San Diego had base runners in the 7th and 9th innings but weren't able to puch the tying run across the plate. #5 Portland Beavers vs #1 Columbus Red Birds - COL leads 3-2 Columbus took a commanding 3-0 series lead after winning game 3 2-1 in 11 innings. Monk Dubiel and Rex Barney pitched the game into a 1-1 tie after 9 innings, the game being decided in the top of the 11th on a sacrifice fly by Len Moss. The Beavers rebounded in games 4 and 5, facing elimination each of the remaining of the series, coming out on the winning side of back to back 1 run games. Dick Sisler picked up the GWRBI in the 6th inning of game 4, lacing a 2 out base hit. Pee Wee Reese squeezed home the winning run in game 5 in the bottom of the 8th. Four of the five games have been decided by one run, as the series heads back to Columbus for game 6. Hollywood won game 1 behind a 3 hitter by Bob Lemon, 5-1. The Stars took the lead in the first inning on a 2 run HR from Ken Keltner and never looked back thanks to Lemon's dominance. Columbus answered back in game 2 getting an impressive performance on the mound from Nels Potter, who spread out 7 hits in a 3-1 win. Potter collected his 3rd post season win while the Red Birds managed just 5 hits of their own. The GWRBI crossed the plate on a solo HR from Eddie Miller in the bottom of the 4th. Hollywood had base-runners in the 8th and 9th, but failed to take advantage. World Series Games 3, 4 and 5Standings - www.stratomaticnation.com/sombb/bowl/1948ps/standings1.htmlHighlights: #2 Hollywood Stars vs #1 Columbus Red Birds – COL leads 3-2 Columbus goes to Hollywood and wins 2 to take a 3-2 series lead heading back home for game 6. The Red Birds won game 3 9-6, staking a lead in the first inning and never losing control of the outcome. Games 4 and 5 both went to extra innings and could have gone either way. Hollywood was victorious in game 4, 3-2 in 13 innings, on a walk-off squeeze play from pitcher Ned Garver scoring Jim Russell. Garver also picked up the win in relief, tossing 4 innings of shutout baseball. Johnny Sain went 11 innings with 11 strikeouts getting a no decision for the Red Birds. In game 5, Columbus trailed 4-3 in the top of the 9th inning and was able to even the score on a pinch hit RBI double by Joe Garagiola. The Red Birds ended the game 3 innings later in the top of the 12th inning when Billy Cox lifted a solo HR for the GWRBI. The Stars had plenty of chances, picking up 12 hits and 5 walks, stranding 13 runners over the 12 innings. World Series Games 6 and 7Standings - www.stratomaticnation.com/sombb/bowl/1948ps/standings1.htmlHighlights: #2 Hollywood Stars vs #1 Columbus Red Birds – HOL wins 4-3 Hollywood fought off elimination in games 6 and 7, beating Columbus in 2 1 run games to win the championship. Game 6 went 10 innings with the game winning run being driven in by Ken Keltner on a 2 out single. Keltner also had a HR earlier in the game, driving in 4 of the Stars 5 runs. Bob Elliot and Eddie Miller had HRs in the loss. Game 7 was tied at 6 going into the 9th inning and was looking like the 4th consecutive extra inning game until Joe Gordon lifted a sacrifice fly in the top half of the inning after 3 consecutive base on balls to load the bases. Columbus wasn't able to rally in their final AB, going down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 9th. Hollywood's Ned Garver picked up 4 post season wins in 2 rounds for the Stars, Ken Keltner and Joe Gordon led the champs offensively, each hitting 4 HRs in the post season, Keltner ending up with 18 RBI, Gordon 14 RBI.
