Wild Card Series Games 1 and 2Standings - www.stratomaticnation.com/sombb/1970kp/1978ps/standings1.htmlHighlights: Springfield Redbirds (6) vs. Toledo Mud Hens (3) – SPR leads 2-0 Springfield storms into Toledo and takes the opening 2 games of the series, 7-4 in 11 innings and 4-1. The wins came at a high cost though, the Redbirds losing 2b Doug Flynn for 15 days in game 1, CF Amos Otis for 15 days and C Tim Blackwell for 2 days in game 2. The Redbirds will be scrambling to recover from the injuries for the rest of the post season and will be hoping for more big days at the plate from Dave Winfield, who went 4-5 with 2 HRs, 4 RBI and 3 RS in game 1. Richmond Braves (5) vs Albuquerque Dukes (4) - series tied 1-1 Both teams pick up wins in Albuquerque, Richmond taking back the home field advantage after the 2 game split. The Braves benefited from 7 dominating innings from J.R. Richard to open the series, pitching 7 shutout innings before surrendering 2 runs before being relieved in the 8th. The Braves plated just 4 runs on 12 hits, but were able to secure the win. Game 2 was a back and forth contest highlighted by Jorge Orts's 2 solo HRs and 3 well pitched innings from the bull pen for the Dukes in the 4-3 victory. Wild Card Series Games 3, 4, and 5Standings - www.stratomaticnation.com/sombb/1970kp/1978ps/standings1.htmlHighlights: Springfield Redbirds (6) vs. Toledo Mud Hens (3) – TOL leads 3-2 Toledo took full advantage of an injury riddled Springfield lineup to claim all 3 games on the road and take a 3-2 series lead back to Toledo. The Mud Hens outscored the Redbirds 18-10 over the 3 games, capped off by a complete game shutout in game 5 by Tom Seaver. Seaver spread out 6 hits and benefited from a 4 run 8th in the win. Toledo's offense has been shared across the entire lineup, 9 batters have RBI's and 8 hve runs scored in the series. Springfield will be hoping for a big day on the mound from Vern Ruhle in game 6 to extend the series. Richmond Braves (5) vs Albuquerque Dukes (4) - RCH leads 3-2 Plenty of offense highlight games 3 and 4, followed by a dominant performance on the mound in game 5. Richmond and Albuquerque split high scoring contests in games 3 and 4, Albuquerque coming out on top 10-1 followed by a 9-6 Richmond win to setup a pivotal game 5. The Dukes had 3 HRs and 16 hits in the game 3 drubbing of the Braves, Richmond bounced back in game 4 with 3 HRs of their own, scoring 5 runs in the first. J.R. Richard took the mound in game 5 allowing a harmless single to Mike Lum in the first inning, and then shutting down the Dukes the rest of the way, tossing a 1 hitter for the 3-0 victory to take the series lead. Wild Card Series Game 6Standings - www.stratomaticnation.com/sombb/1970kp/1978ps/standings1.htmlHighlights: Springfield Redbirds (6) vs. Toledo Mud Hens (3) – TOL wins 4-2 Toledo advances to the semifinals in a 4-3 10 inning victory over Springfield. Springfield trailed early, but battled back and tied the game in the 8th on a 2 run double from Art Howe. The game remained tied until the bottom of the 10th when Bobby Murcer drove in Jose Cruz to advance the Mud Hens to the semifinals. Charlie Hough pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief for the win. Richmond Braves (5) vs Albuquerque Dukes (4) - RCH wins 4-2 Richmond and Albuquerque go 13 innings before the Braves push the eventual game winning run across the plate on a Bob Horner sacrifice fly. The game was tied at 3 after 4 innings and the 2 teams went scoreless into the 13th. The Dukes tried to rally in the bottom of the inning, putting runners on the corners before running out of outs and being eliminated. Richmond used 7 pitchers over the last 4 innings to secure the 4-3 win. Toledo trailed 2-0 in game 3 going into the bottom of the 9th and rallied for 3 runs and the win on a combination of 3 singles and 2 walks, Al Oliver driving in the game winning run with a walk off single. In game 4, Louisville took a 5-2 lead into the 9th inning and held of another Hens rally, ending the contest with a 5-4 win thanks to a clutch save from Bob McLure, retiring the potential game winning run with a strikeout. The Colonels fended off elimination in game 5, breaking a 4-4 tie in the 12th inning for a 6-4 win. Jeff Burroughs doubled in 2 runs in the top of the inning, reliever Kevin Kobel pitched a shutout bottom of the 12th for the win. Richmond Braves (5) vs Phoenix Giants (1) - PHX wins 4-1 Phoenix advances to the World Series taking games 4 and 5, Richmond recording their only victory in game 3, routing the Giants 15-0 behind 20 hits and a complete game 4 hitter from Francisco Barrios. The tide turned in game 4, the Giants scored 10 unanswered runs putting the contest out of reach early ending up with a 10-5 win. Bob Watson and Mike Cubbage each had 3 RBI and Bob Knepper pitched 8 2/3 innings for Phoenix. Game 5 featured a pitchers duel between Bert Blyleven and Luis Tiant, the game being decided by a lone RBI from Reggie Smith in the 3rd inning. The loss was Tiant's 3rd in the post season, Blyleven had 9 K's in the win. Knepper pitched a 4 hitter in game 1, keeping the Giants in the game until the offense woke up in the 7th inning by pushing 4 runs across the plate to take the lead, the rally highlighted by a 3 run HR from Bob Watson. Game 2 was close until another 7th inning 4 run outburst from the Giants, extending their lead to 7-2. The big inning for Phoenix included 5 hits and the team batting around. Blyleven allowed 8 hits, striking out 12, in the 8-2 final.
