Mike Ivie had 4 hits, 4 RBI and scored 2 runs, including a game winning 2 run HR in the 15th. Syracuse only managed 9 hits in the game, held in check by Dennis Eckersley, Danny Darwin and Bruce Sutter. Toledo Mud Hens (5) vs Richmond Braves (4) - series tied 1-1 Game 1 was the closer of the opening series split between Toledo and Richmond, a 3-1 win for the Mud Hens. Steve Carlton and J. R. Richard took the mound in the opening game for a match-up of power pitchers, both tossing complete games and allowing 6 or less hits (and 5 or more walks). Richard whiffed 15 batters in the 3-1 loss, while Davey Lopes had a HR and 2 RBI for the Hens in the win. The Pelicans picked up 1 run victories in games 3 and 5 to take the 3-2 series lead, highlighted by a game 5 12 inning walkoff win from the bat of Mike Ivie. Ivie launched a leadoff HR in the bottom of the 12th to end the game, his 5th HR in 5 post season games. Toledo Mud Hens (5) vs Richmond Braves (4) - RCH leads 3-2 Richmond wins 2 in Toledo and heads home needing just 1 more win to advance. The Braves won games 3 and 4 easily, 7-0 and 8-4, taking a 3-1 series lead over Toledo. Bob Horner was the offensive star in game 4 with 3 HRs for Richmond. The Hens fought back in game 5 behind a Tom Seaver shutout to force a game 6. Toledo Mud Hens (5) vs Richmond Braves (4) - RCH wins 4-2 Richmond scored early and often in the series ending game against Toledo, eliminating the Mud Hens 7-1 in a one-sided contest. Eric Rasmussen tossed a 4 hitter for the win, with Bob Horner and Willie Wilson pairing up for 5 RS. Louisville's championship hopes took a big hit in game 1, Joe Morgan going down for a 5 game injury in his 2nd at bat. Richmond Braves (4) vs Phoenix Giants (2) - series tied 1-1 Richmond and Phoenix split the opening 2 games of the series, Richmond taking over the home field advantage in an exciting opening game victory. The Braves and Giants blew open a game 1 pitchers duel, each team scoring 5 runs over the last 2 innings. Richmond trailed 5-4 going into their last at bat and rallied for 3 runs, 2 on a single swing from Bob Horner, a 2 run HR blast. The Giants fought back in the bottom of the 9th, scoring 1 run, but stranding the game tying run on 3rd. Phoenix answered with a 9-1 win in game 2 to even the series, led by Reggie Smith's HR and 3 RBI. Danny Darwin earned his 3rd win in relief in game 4, benefiting from 8 strong innings from Nolan Ryan before taking over for the 9th and 10th innings and a walkoff HR from Wayne Nordhagen. The Colonels are taking the momentum back to Louisville for games 6, but their backs are up against the wall. Richmond Braves (4) vs Phoenix Giants (2) - RCH wins 4-1 Richmond knocks off Phoenix in 5 games, winning 3 straight at home and earning some off days before the finals. Phoenix took the early lead in all 3 games, but the Braves offense couldn't be contained, mounting come from behind wins in each contest. Bob Horner is batting .511 with 6 HRs and 12 RBI in the Braves 11 post season games so far, the offensive MVP of the playoffs to this point. Reggie Jackson is living up to his Mr. October nickname for Richmond as well, with 4 HRs and 13 RBI. New Orleans posted a run in each of the final 2 innings to eliminate the Colonels 3-1 to advance to the finals. Nolan Ryan whiffed 14, allowing just 2 hits to pick up the series clinching win.
