Eau Claire's Ted Williams is in Triple Crown position, but his teammate Eddie Mathews is a threat in the RBI race, both with 123 RBI. The Mud Hens continue to get terrific pitching, this time from Curt Simmons who is 3-0 in August already, with 3 CGs and 17ks. Only 1 team is eliminated from the playoff chase, 8 teams have a chance for the last playoff position. Louisville exploded for 20 runs on 8/20 in a blowout victory over the Denver Bears, led by Gil Hodges who went 4-5 with a HR, triple, 6 RBI and 3 RS. The Bears pitching gave up 21 H and 9 BB. Only 4 of the 21 H were for extra bases! Beaumont's Harvey Haddix is trying to give the Exporter fans something to cheer about while they are waiting for the draft to start. Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1953/standings.htmlHighlights: Congratulations to the playoff teams (in seeded order): (1) Toledo (2) Amarillo (the Gold Sox 3rd post season in 4 years) (3) Eau Claire (4) New Orleans In a very exciting final few weeks the Pelicans went 12-1 to overtake Hollywood, Denver and Chattanooga for the last playoff spot. The Mud Hens were dominant all year and have the well earned home field advantage in the playoffs. It should be a terrific set of match-ups in the semis. Eau Claire Bears put together their own abbreviated version of Murderers Row of Ted Williams, Eddie Mathews, and Carl Furillo. Williams came within 9 RBI of the triple crown, winning the batting title (batting .403!) and the HR title (74 HR). Mathews won teh RBI race and came in a distant second in HR. Amarillo Gold Sox Warren Spahn led all pitchers with 25 wins and tied for the ERA lead with the Senators Billy Pierce (2.34 ERA).
