Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1954/standingspo.htmlHighlights: Both home teams hold serve in games 1 and 2! New Orleans won two terrific games in the top of the bracket. The Pelicans won game 1 with a 2 run rally in the bottom of the 9th, ending on a walk off error on a groundball by Phil Caverretta that was booted by Granny Hamner allowing Alvin Dark to score. In game 2, Caverretta scored all 3 runs for the Pelicans, including 2 HR. Beaumont made it close in the 9th with doubles from Hamner and Schantz, but came up short with Schantz getting stranded at 2nd and the Exporters losing by a run. In the other half of the draw, Denver won game 1 11-3 with offense coming from all slots in the lineup, including SP Don Mossi who went 2-3, 2R and an RBI; in addition to his complete game victory. Game 2 was a different story. The Indians lead 2-1 in the bottom of the 8th, before the Bears offense kick started for 3 runs on 4 hits and a sac fly to go ahead. Early Wynn allowed a leadoff base hit to Groth to start the top of the 9th, but retired the next 3 hitters for the CG victory. Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1954/standingspo.htmlHighlights: The top two seeds both went on the road and closed out their series in 5 games. In the Denver / Indianapolis series, the Indians momentum from their season ending run to the playoffs finally lost steam. Indianapolis won an exciting game 3 in extra innings, capped off with a 2 out walk-off HR by Willie Mays. The Bears took control back in games 4 and 5, powered by Frank Thomas' back to back 4 hit performances, chalking up 3 HR, 8 RBI and 2 RS over the final 2 games of the series. Beaumont recorded a lopsided 8-1 victory in game three of their semifinal series with New Orleans, only to have the Pelicans come back to close out the Exporters with victories in games 4 and 5. The Exporters game 3 win was highlighted by a grand slam by Hammerin' Hank Aaron, which proved to be his last hit of the series as the Pelicans dominant pitching took over in the final two games. Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1954/standingspo.htmlHighlights: New Orleans keeps rolling, with their starting pitching leading the way. The Pelicans won both home games to take a 2-0 series lead over the Bears. Harry Dorish threw 7 strong innings, allowing 1 run in a 3-1 victory in game 1. Bob Nieman tripled and scored the eventual game winning run in the 4th inning on a base hit by Phil Caveretta. John Antonelli pitched a complete game shutout in game 2 in an 8-0 lopsided victory. The Pelicans offense was powered by George Kell (2 HR 4 RBI) and Lary Doby (1 HR 3 RBI). The Bears are relying on Tom Poholsky to turn things around on the mound in game 3, and on the entire lineup to find some much needed offense! Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1954/standingspo.htmlHighlights: The series is going back to New Orleans! The Bears jumped out quickly in game 3, with 3 runs in the bottom of the first on a HR by Frank Thomas, his 4th of the post season. The Pelicans battled back and tied the game in the 6th on an RBI single by Red Wilson. The Bears fought hard to hold off the Pelicans with Tom Poholsky throwing a 5 hit CG gem, and getting a 2 out RBI double by Stan Lopata in the bottom of the 7th to secure the Bears 4-3 win. The Pelicans Ray Narleski and the Bears Gordon Jones locked up in a pitchers duel in Game 4, both allowing only 1 ER. The Pelicans took advantage of Bears errors in the 2nd and 4th inning to put 2 unearned runs on the board, which proved to be the difference in the game. Alvin Dark had 4 of the 5 Pelican hits in the game, driving in 2 runs and scoring the 3rd in the Pelicans 3-1 victory. Facing elimination at home in game 5, Denver's offense struck early and often, scoring 8 runs in the first 3 innings, including Frank Thomas' 5th HR of the playoffs. Don Mossi complimented the offensive outburst with 8 innings of 3 hit pitching to seal the 8-1 win, sending the series back to New Orleans.
