Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1956/standingspo.htmlHighlights: Charleston vs. Louisville - series tied 1-1 The Colonels stepped up to the challenge of going into Forbes Field, splitting with the heavy favorite, Charleston Senators. Charleston was 10-4 against Louisville during the season, but in a short series, anything can happen. Charleston won game 1 on an 8th inning error by Louisville's Johnny Logan, allowing Richie Ashburn to score the game winning run and break a 1-1 tie. Game 2 was decidedly one sided, with the Colonels jumping out to an early 2 run lead, which was more than enough for Tom Brewer, who pitched a 4 hit complete game shutout. Denver vs. New Orleans - series tied 1-1 The Pelicans made a strong statement early in game 1, scoring in each of the 1st 3 innings, ending up with a 7-0 victory. Johnny Antonelli pitched a terrific 2 hit shutout, and 5 different hitters recorded a multi-hit game for New Orleans. The Bears struck back in game 2, led by Ted Williams 3 hits/2 RS and 2 RBI each from Carl Furillo and Smokey Burgess. The 3rd complete game shutout of the playoffs was tossed in game 2, this time by Denver's Dick Donovan. Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1956/standingspo.htmlHighlights: Charleston vs. Louisville - CHS wins 4-1 Charleston found their regular season form somewhere on the bus ride to Louisville, and stepped on the field ready to play. Games 3 and 4 were decided by the same 8-5 score, and the clinching game 5 ended up in a 5-1 Charleston victory. Solly Hemus, Roy McMillan and Richie Ashburn all batted .333 for the Senators combining for 8 RS and 8 RBI during the series. Louisville got terrific pitching from Tom Acker in his 2 starts (only getting an average of 1 RSUP) ending up with 2 losses. The Colonels also had great hitting from Gus Triandos and Al Kaline, but that's where their offense ended. Denver vs. New Orleans - DEN leads 3-2 Denver dominated game 3, scoring 10 runs including a 5 run 5th. Earl Torgeson drove in 3 runs and 8 Bears crossed the plate in the victory. The Bears also took control of game 4, wining 8-5, led by the top of the Denver lineup (Harvey Kuenn, Carl Furillo, Ted Williams) scoring 5 runs and driving in 6. With the Pelicans feathers up against the wall, New Orleans battled to the end in game 5 to keep their playoff run alive, beating the Bears in a terrific 10 inning ball game. The Pelicans had a 5 run lead going into the top of the 9th, only to have Denver rally to tie the game with two out HR's by Earl Torgeson and Smoky Burgess. The Pelicans were able to bounce back in the 10th and pull out the victory on a single by Walt Moryn, and a walkoff triple by Bob Nieman. The series is heading back to Denver with the Pelicans facing back to back must win games on the road. Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1956/standingspo.htmlHighlights: Denver vs. New Orleans - DEN wins 4-3 The Pelicans continued to live on the edge in the first of the pair of must win games in Denver. New Orleans broke open a 0-0 game in the top of the 7th on another RBI triple by Bob Nieman, driving in 2 runs and then scoring on a passed ball. The Pelicans extended the 3-0 lead in the top of the 9th on a Walt Moryn solo HR, and it turned out they needed it. In the bottom of the 9th, down 4-0, the Bears rallied on 3 singles and a walk against starter Wally Burnette. Ray Narleski was brought into the game in relief and retired the next two batters on infield pop ups and looked to be out of the jam only needing one more out to force game 7. Harvey Kuenn would have none of that, driving in 2 with a double to bring the game to 4-3. After an intentional walk, PH Stan Lopata came to the plate in a clutch situation and weakly grounded out to end the game. With the series on the line in Game 7, the Bears offense continued the momentum started in the 9th inning in Game 6, scoring 9 runs on 12 hits, giving Don Newcombe plenty of room to pitch around the tough spots in the lineup and earn his 2nd victory of the 1956 post season. Harvey Kuenn scored 3 runs and had 3 hits and Stan Lopata made up for his missed opportunity in game 6, driving in 5 runs with 2 HRs. Congratulations to Randy and Steve on a great year! Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1956/standingspo.htmlHighlights: Denver vs. Charleston - series tied 1-1 Charleston's 10-4 advantage during the regular season meant nothing to the Bears, with Denver rolling in game 1 to a 6-1 victory, powered by 16 hits and clutch pitching by Dick Donovan. The Senators scored first, on an RBI single by Minnie Minoso in the bottom of the first, but that was the extent of the runs scoring for Charleston. Donovan scattered 9 hits and 2 walks over 8 innings, and the Sens ended up with 9 runners LOB. The Bears had 3 hits from 4 different batters, including 2 doubles by Ted Williams, who is now hitting .471 so far in the playoffs. It looked like the Senators were going to end up down 2 games going back to Denver until a dramatic bottom of the 9th. Denver took a 2-1 lead into the 9th in a terrific pitchers duel between Don Newcombe and Taylor Phillips, when Charleston's offense finally woke up. Minoso led off the 9th with a solo blast to tie the game, followed by back to back base hits by Mickey Vernon and Sherm Lollar. The Bears pulled Newcombe in favor of Bob Miller to put out the fire. Miller didn't meet the challenge as Solly Hemus singled to load the bases and Roy McMillan singled to drive in the game winning run and close the books on the 3-2 Senator win. Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1956/standingspo.htmlHighlights: Denver vs. Charleston - Denver leads 3-2 Denver's pitching continues to stymie Charleston's bats, keeping the Sens to under 3 runs per game. more than a run and a half less than their season average. Denver took advantage of the longball and clutch pitching in game 3, going yard 3 times and stranding 11 Charleston runners. Ted Williams, Smokey Burgess and Earl Torgeson each knocked HRs and Herb Score spread out 7 hits and 7 BBs over 8 innings in the Bears 8-3 win. Game 4 was one-sided for 8 innings, with Denver taking a 4-0 lead on 5 hits in the bottom of the 4th. Dick Donovan held the Sens scoreless until the top of the 9th when Charleston started their only really of the game. With 2 down, Sherm Lollar doubled in a run and Solly Hemus tripled in 2 more to cut the Bears lead to 1. Roy McMillan had a chance to extend the game with Hemus on 3rd, but came up short with a deep fly to the warning track, setting up a must win in position for the Senators for the rest of the series. Carl Furillo led the Bears with 2 hits, 2 RBI and 1 RS in the victory. Both teams came to play in a very exciting game 5. Both teams having plenty of opportunities to blow the game open, only to be shut down by timely pitching. Charleston took an early lead on an RBI single by Jackie Jensen in the 1st. Denver struck back in the 4th and 5th, posting a run in each inning on sac flies to take a 2-1 lead. Charleston answered immediately in the 6th to take back the lead for good with a pair of 2 out hits, plating 2 runs. Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1956/standingspo.htmlHighlights: Game 6 Denver wins the series 4-2 The Bears scored early and often, putting Charleston away with 10 runs in the first 3 innings, topped with a 7 run 3rd. The game was over before the Senators batters saw their second AB of the game thanks to explosive hitting by Denver. The combination of Ray Boone, Ted Williams, and Frank Thomas scored 7 runs and drove in 9 on 5 extra base hits. As it turns out, 1 run would have been enough thanks to a dominating 3 hitter by Herb Score, chalking up 9 K's in the CG victory. CONGRATULATIONS to Greg and his DENVER BEARS on BACK TO BACK league championships!/b]
Congrats to Rob (me) and the Senators posting the most wins in a season so far.
