Beaumont vs. Toledo - TMH wins the series 4-1
The
Mud Hens head back to Toledo and make the most of the home field advantage, sweeping
Beaumont and closing out the series. Toledo's pitching led the way in all 3 games, keeping the Exporters bats silent.
Curt Simmons pitched a 5-hitter in game 3, spreading out 6 BBs and stranding 10 in a 3-1 victory. The Hens plated two in the bottom of the 1st and that was all Simmons needed to go the distance.
Jim Landis scored 2 runs and had 2 SBs for the Go-Go-Hens. Game 4 was a terrific pitchers duel, with Beaumont scoring on a solo blast by
Dick Groat in the 1st inning, and Toledo tying the game in the 7th on a sac fly by
Yogi Berra, driving in
Hank Bauer. The 1-1 tie carried into the bottom of the 10th inning, when Landis singled, stole 2nd, and was driven in on a walk of single by
Jim Rivera.
Jim Bunning pitched the 10 inning gem, giving up 4 hits and 1 BB. Beaumont did their best to put the series back on track in game 5, sending
Robin Roberts to the mound. The Exporters got on the board first, resorting to small ball in the 4th scoring on a single by
Joe Cunningham, a bunt by
Groat and an RBI single by
Bob Hazle. Toledo took back the lead in the 7th on 2 triples and a double by Berra,
Ed Bouchee and
Lou Skizas. Beaumont didn't quit, fighting back to tie the game in the 8th thanks to a 2 out error by Landis allowing
Charlie Neal to score and send the game into extra innings. Toledo rallied in the bottom of the 10th when Groat booted a
Bill Virdon roller, advancing to third on a double by Rivera and a series ending run scoring base hit by Berra. Toledo's pitching was dominant, shutting down the best leagues best offense, holding the Exporters to less than 2 runs/game.
Chattanooga vs. Montreal - CHL leads 3-2
The
Lookouts continued their winning ways in game 3, chalking up an extra inning victory to take a 3-0 series lead. Chattanooga and
Montreal took a 5-5 tie into the 12th inning before the Lookouts blew the game open, scoring 5 runs and sending 10 runners to the plate.
Al Smith spearheaded the offense, driving in 3 runs on a double and a HR. Montreal's bullpen let the Royals down again, with
Hoyt Wilhelm getting the loss for the 2nd time in 3 games. Montreal's chances looked dim with their backs up against the wall in game 4, falling behind 4-0 going into the bottom of the 4th, when the Royals rallied racking up 3 runs on a bases loaded double by
Danny O'Connell and a RBI ground out by SP
Jack Urban. Montreal tied the game at 4 in the 6th on a solo HR by
Eddie Matthews, and went ahead for good in the 8th on a
Roy Sievers solo homerun. The Royals went into game 5 with their spirits high, only to have the Lookouts score in the first 2 innings and take a 4-2 lead into the 7th inning highlighted by a 2 run HR by
Mickey Mantle. The rally caps went on in the bottom of the 7th and Montreal's bats caught fire scoring 5 runs to take the lead on a solo blast by
Roger Maris and a
GRAND SLAM by
Wes Covington. Chattanooga threatened in the top of the 9th, loading the bases with no outs, setting the table for
Mantle who sacrificed in a run on a flyball to the warning track in deep center field.
Ed Bailey grounded out advancing the runners to 2nd and 3rd, only to have
Frank Malzone strikeout in the clutch. The Lookouts left 23 runners on base in games 4 and 5, if the Royals keep the momentum, the missed chances could be the pivotal point of the series.
