Semifinal Games 1 and 2Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1958/standingspo.htmlHighlights: Chattanooga vs. Charleston - CHS leads 2-0 The Lookouts were ready for the Senators in game one and pushed the regular season champs to their last out taking a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 9th. Carl Willey pitched a 2 hit gem for 8 innings and turned the lead over to the Lookouts bullpen. The Senators loaded the bases and scored the equalizing run on a Jackie Jensen sacrifice fly. Then, with two outs and Sherm Lollar on 3rd, Pedro Ramos crossed up catcher Joe Pignatano and threw a fastball to the backstop allowing Lollar to race home with the winning run. Game 2 was a close game for 6 innings, tied at 6, before the Senators put 5 runs on the board in the 7th to blow the game open. Dave Philley had 4 hits, including a double and triple, driving in 6 to give the Senators a 2-0 lead in the series. Indianapolis vs. Montreal - MON leads 2-0 The Royals matched the Senators form, holding home field advantage in their series with the Indians. Montreal scored early and posted a comfortable lead in game 1, ending up with a solid 6-2 victory over Indianapolis. Montreal was powered at the plate by Wes Covington with 2 RS and 3 RBI in support of Whitey Ford's CG performance on the mound. Ford allowed 11 base-runners but got great support from his infield with 3 double plays, helping him strand 7 Indians on base on the way to the victory. Game 2 borrowed the script from game 1 of the CHL/CHS series, with the Indians taking a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 9th. In this game, the Indians Stu Miller took a shutout into the 9th and was left in the game to finish the job but the game turned on one swing of the bat. Duke Snider led off the inning with a HBP and Rocky Colavito followed two batters later with a bomb to left center field to send the Royals fans home with a walk-off victory and a 2-0 series advantage. Snider will be out of the lineup for at least the rest of the series because of the HBP. Daily Recaps and League File - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1958/leaguefilesplayoffs/semifinal_1.zip

Semifinal Games 3, 4, and 5Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1958/standingspo.htmlHighlights: Chattanooga vs. Charleston - CHS leads 3-2 Game 3 got off to a roaring start between Charleston and Chattanooga, with the teams scoring runs in both halves of the first 3 innings, and the Senators in the top of the 4th. Once the bats quieted down, Charleston was left standing with an 8-4 lead. The Lookouts rallied in the 7th for 2 runs to close the gap, but came up short ending up with their backs against the wall down 3 games to none. Game 4 also got off to a quick start offensively, with the teams knotted up at 4 after 3 innings. The score stayed that way until the bottom of the 10th, when Mickey Mantle stepped to the plate to lead off the 10th and delivered a souvenir to the left field stands, a solo HR to win the game for the Lookouts. Camilo Pascual pitched all 10 innings for Chattanooga, recording 11 K's in the win. Chattanooga was 2 outs away from the end of their season, trailing the Senators 2-1, before they staged a rally to send the series back to Charleston. After a flyout by Roberto Clemente, the Lookouts put together back to back to back singles by Rocky Bridges, Ed Bailey, and Johnny Temple to tie the game. With an opportunity to repeat his game 4 heroics, Mickey Mantle strode to the plate and delivered the walkoff hit again, the 4th consecutive single, driving in Ed Bailey to win the game. Indianapolis vs. Montreal - MON leads 3-2 Indianapolis and Montreal showed up ready to score runs in game 3, with the Royals taking a 9-7 lead after 6 innings. The Indians rallied to tie the game in exciting fashion, getting clutch RBI's from Willie Mays and Ernie Banks in the bottom of the 9th. The Royals were able to turn the momentum in the top of the 11th with a 2 out rally, the GWRBI delivered on a single by Woodie Held, and an insurance run on a single by Tony Kubek. Facing elimination in game 4, the Indians scored 7 unanswered runs over 7 innings to post their first victory of the series. Alex Kellner helped his own cause from the mound and the plate, pitching 8 strong innings and driving in 2 runs. The Indians Bob Rush delivered the best pitching performance of the post season, pitching a CG, allowing 5 hits and 0 BBs in game 5. The Royals took advantage of the 5 hits, scoring 4 runs on HRs by Rocky Covalito and Roger Maris, but came up a run short. Indianapolis posted 5 runs with 4 different batters recording an RBI and 4 different runners crossing the plate. The game was tightly contested, and the Indians fans were on the edge of their seats the entire game, watching the home team strand 10 runners on base and missing a number of chances to put the game out of reach. In the end Indianapolis was able to hold on sending the teams back to Montreal for game 5. The post season is taking a toll on the playoff teams, with 7 players being knocked out so far, including Del Crandall, Red Schoendienst, Duke Snider, Lew Burdette, Jim Gilliam, Johnny Roseboro, and Valmy Thomas. Senators starting pitcher Frank Lary locked down Chattanooga for the rest of the game after allowing those 2 runs and Charleston was able to climb back into the game in the 6th inning on a game tying double by Billy Goodman. Finals Game 1 and 2Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1958/standingspo.htmlHighlights: Montreal vs. Charleston - Series tied In a classic pitching vs. hitting match-up, Montreal takes the top offense in the league to the batters box against Charleston and the leagues toughest pitching. The Royals launched the most HRs this year with 267, and the Senators allowed the fewest with less than half of the Royals total, 132. The Royals strengths out weighed the Senators in game 1, with Montreal scoring 5 big runs in the opening inning on an RBI single by Rocky Colavito and a grand slam by Bob Cerv. Whitey Ford picked up the win, pitching a strong 6 2/3 before his fielding let him down and 3 un-earned runs crossed the plate for Charleston. Roy Seivers collected the remaining 3 runs for the Royals on a HR in the 4th inning to put the game away early. Charleston bounced back in game 2 with strong pitching and clutch fielding with Lew Burdette allowing 1 R on 10 hits and erasing threats in 4 innings with timely double plays. The Senators were able to scratch together 4 runs, which proved to be enough to tie the series at 1-1. Charleston's offense came in 3 consecutive innings, the 3rd, 4th and 5th, with RBI's from Richie Ashburn, Dave Philley, Jim Gilliam and Roy McMillan, with McMillan topping all batters with 3 hits in the game. Final Games 3, 4, and 5Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1958/standingspo.htmlHighlights: Montreal vs. Charleston - MON leads 3-2 With the series even after Montreal took over home field advantage in the opening game of the series, the Royals was ready to close out the finals at home looking for a sweep. Game 3 started quickly for Montreal just as it did in game 1, with the Royals posting 5 runs in the 1st inning on HR's by Roy Sievers and Bob Cerv. The game wasn't decided that quickly however, as the Royals went scoreless the rest of the game thanks to strong pitching by the Senators bullpen. Charleston scratched and clawed the rest of the game to close the gap to 2 runs by the 9th inning to get within striking distance. The Senators opened up the 9th with back to back doubles by Sherm Lollar and Hal Smith to make the score 5-4. The 5-6-7 hitters all had chances to come through in the clutch and tie the game, with Smith watching from 2nd base, all three batters weakly grounded out to the Royals infielders to end the game, The Royals sent their ace, 24 game winner, Whitey Ford to the mound to press their advantage in game 5, and Whitey delivered. The Royals gave Ford an early 2-0 lead on a 2-run bomb by Wes Covington, which proved to be enough for the Royals to take a 3-1 series lead. The Senators could only muster a single run against Ford with the Royals adding insurance runs in the 7th and 8th innings to put the victory in the bag. Charleston finally got their offense rolling in game 5, facing elimination brought out the urgency that the Senators hitters needed to get moving. Charleston scored 5 runs in the 7th to round out a 10-1 victory, led by Jackie Jensen with 3 RBI and 3 RS with 2 HR. Charleston smacked 6 HRs on the night in support of Billy Pierce's 5 hitter. Final Games 6 and 7Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1958/standingspo.htmlHighlights: Montreal vs. Charleston - CHS wins 4-3 Charleston headed home with no margin for error, down 3 games to 2, going into the friendly confines of Forbes Field needing to carry the momentum from their convincing game 5 victory. In a terrific pitchers duel, game 6 was closely contested with Charleston coming out on top 2-1. Charleston's starter Lew Burdette went 7 innings to pick up the victory, allowing 7 hits and 1 BB before handing the game over 1958's top closer Ryne Duren to secure the save. Chatham rallied in the 6th to tie the game on a sac fly by Jim Gilliam and then took the lead in the 7th on a double by Richie Ashburn that Wes Covington (LF-5 e13) misplayed into a 2 base error that allowed the speedy Ashburn to reach home. Montreal's Hoyt Wilhelm allowed 7 hits, and the only earned run of the game in the loss, pitching 8 strong innings and scoring the only run of the game for the Royals after reaching base on an error in the 3rd inning. Game 6 paled in comparison to the epic 12 inning battle of game 7. The final game of the series was one for the ages! Neither team was able to post a run for the first 11 innings thanks to fantastic pitching from 20 game winners, the Royal's Whitey Ford and Senator's Frank Lary. The Royals could only muster 3 hits and gave plenty of chances to Charleston by committing 3 errors. Charleston squandered opportunities in almost every inning, stranding 11 runners on base, including 6 in scoring position. The teams entered the 12 with the fans on their feet and the tension thick enough to cut with a knife. Charleston's Humberto Robinson dismissed the Royals 1-2-3 in the top of the inning and faced Royals RP Gerry Staley to lead off the bottom of the 12th. After Robinbson's ground out, game 6 hero Richie Ashburn ripped a frozen rope to center field. Ashburn took off on the very next pitch and stole 2nd base to get into scoring position. Minnie Minoso stepped to the plate with a chance to deliver the championship and came through with the series winning double to drive in Ashburn. Congratulations to Mike and the Montreal Royals on a great season and a terrific job turning around the franchise. The Royals are LOADED for 1959. The league parity is continuing, with the Senators chalking up their first championship, increasing the tally of teams to win it all to 7 in 9 seasons.
