The Exporters had 7 batters with RBIs, led by Dick Groat with 5. All 9 players in the starting lineup crossed the plate for Beaumont. Toledo is playing small ball and running at every opportunity, recording 16 SBs, stretching for the extra base in 10 out of 12 chances, and attempting 13 sacrifices. Jim Landis and Luis Aparacio each have 8 SB for the Hens. Louisville's Jim Lemon is out to an early lead at the plate, leading in HRs with 6 and RBI with 12. 1959 is Lemon's career year for slugging (.510) and RBI (100) in 531 ABs. Week 2Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1959/standings.htmlHighlights: Indianapolis one ups Beaumont's week 1 offensive explosion with one of their own, going for 18 runs on 4/19, with Willie Mays and Jim Davenport each driving in 5 runs. All of the position players drove in and scored a run for Indianapolis in the 18-8 victory over Kansas City. The Indians had 13 hits and 8 BBs, leaving only 4 runners on base in the game. Chattanooga's Ed Bailey and Denver's Bill Skowron both had 3 HR / 7 RBI games this week, Bailey on 4/13 in a 13-9 win over Hollywood and Skowron on 4/15 in a 7-2 win over Montreal. Bailey anchored a 10 run rally in the final 3 innings to secure the Lookouts victory while Skowron provided all of the run scoring knocks in the Bears win. Beaumont's Don Drysdale had impressive back to back outings this week, chalking up double digit strikeout performances on 4/15 against Amarillo and 4/19 against Montreal. Both games were complete game victories for Drysdale, helping the Exporters to an 8-6 start to the season. Week 3Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1959/standings.htmlHighlights: 1959 is off to a great start, only 4 games separate 1st and last after 20 games. Charleston, Amarillo, Toledo and Montreal are living on pitching. Louisville, Chattanooga and Hollywood are raking at the plate. The rest of the league is staying in the running with balanced rosters. Toledo and Beaumont played a thrilling extra inning ballgame on 4/26, with the Hens rallying in the top of the 11th to pull out a 10-9 victory. Toledo posted 2 runs in the top of the inning on back to back to back singles by Ed Bouchee, Yogi Berra and Norm Siebern to take the lead. Turk Lown jogged to the mound for his third inning in relief in the bottom of the inning to close out the game. Beaumont's Joe Cunningham led off the inning with a solo HR and Hank Aaron walked to put the equalizing run on base. Week 4Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1959/standings.htmlHighlights: Toledo's Jim Bunning pitched an 11 inning gem on 5/ 3 against the Denver Bears. Bunning whiffed 12 in the 5-4 win. With the score tied at 4 in the bottom of the 11th, PH Rip Repulski laced a single to left and then advanced to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Luis Aparacio. Jim Landis then settled into the batters box and wasted no time, ripping a double into the gap, driving in Repulski with the walk off winning run. Louisville's Charlie Maxwell crushed 3 HRs on 4/29, driving in 7 runs in the 10-5 victory over Denver. Maxwell is the 4th batter to hit 3 HRs in a game already this season, and the 3rd to drive in 7 runs. Maxwell now leads the league in HR (16) and RBI (33), with 8 HR and 19 RBI in his last 10 games. Week 5Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1959/standings.htmlHighlights: Plenty of free baseball on 5/10, with half of the games going into extra innings. In the longest game of the day Montreal defeated Toledo on a walk-off 2 out single in the 15th inning by Don Demeter, driving in Eddie Mathews, to give the Royals a 3-2 win. Louisville's Charlie Maxwell crossed the plate 5 times on 5/4 in a victory over Charleston. Maxwell went 3-3 on the day with 2 HR, 2 BB and 2 RBI in addition to the 5 RS for the Colonels. The Colonels also got a terrific pitching performance this week, with Roger Craig hurling the first 1 hitter of the season on 5/6 against Toledo. Week 6Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1959/standings.htmlHighlights: Kansas City and Chattanooga both made a big moves this week and have climbed up the standings, both just 2 games out of 1st place. The Blues completed a 10 game winning streak and are 13-3 over their last 16 and the Lookouts are 8-1 over their last 9. Gary Bell is 7-3 on the mound for Kansas City with Willie Kirkland and Harmon Killebrew combining for 31 HR and 80 RBI. The Lookouts pitching staff is 2nd in the league in WHIP and 3rd in OppBA, with their hitters posting the 3rd best OBP and 2nd most runs in the league. Louisville has the Kirkland/Killebrew pairing topped with Charlie Maxwell and Jim Lemon blasting 38 HR, bringing the Colonels a little closer to first place, trailing the Senators by 1 game. Denver and Chattanooga played a marathon 16 inning game on 5/13, with the Bears coming out on top 5-3. The Lookouts tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the 9th on a single by Frank Malzone. The game remained deadlocked at 3 until the top of the 16th when Joe Demaestri launched a 2 R bomb to put the game away for Denver. Gilliam is 3rd in SBs with 24 behind Toledo's Luis Aparacio (35) and Jim Landis (29). First place Charleston is getting strong performances all around. Frank Lary is 4-0 in his last 4 starts after beginning the season 0-3 in his first 9 starts. Lee Maye is 18-35 over his last 10 including 10-13 in his last 3 games. Kansas City's Gary Bell is 5-0 in his last 6 starts and now leads all hurlers with 8 wins. Louisville's Al Kaline is in a groove at the plate. Kaline is .486 over his last 10 games with 7 HR and 10 RBI. The standings are still very close, 6 games separate 1st and 10th place! Week 8Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1959/standings.htmlHighlights: Memorial Day weekend will be a bad memory for the Senators, Charleston is in a 5 game skid, losing 6 of the last 7 and falling from first into a 3 team tie for 3rd. Louisville, Hollywood, Montreal, and Kansas City all took advantage and made up ground on the Senators in the standings. Kansas City's Sandy Koufax sent 13 New Orleans Pelicans down on strikes on 5/28 in a 3-2 victory. Koufax recorded the 13 Ks in 8 innings on the mound before giving way to Don Elston for the save. This was Koufax's first victory of the season. Montreal's Tito Francona hit .464 over the last 10 games and has raised his average to a league best .373 . 1959 was Francona's career year, batting .363/.414/.566 and placing 5th in MVP voting. Early Wynn is leading a spotty pitching staff with an 8-6 record and a 5.14 ERA, Wynn is winning thanks to a 5.92 RSUP in his starts. The runs are coming from a balanced lineup that is 3rd in the league in scoring. Hollywood's Willie McCovey is working on replicating his 1959 Rookie of the Year season, leading all batters in OPS and RC27 and 3rd in AVG. Montreal's Tito Francona leads all hitters with 8 GWRBI to go along with his top batting average of .373 . Louisville's Al Kaline has 17 H in his last 32 AB with 3 HR and 9 RBI and has 6 out of 8 multi-hit games. Kaline is now batting .344 on the year and has teamed with Charlie Maxwell, Jim Lemon, and Gil Hodges to place 4 Louisville batters in the top 8 on the OPS table. Denver's Smokey Burgess has 13 RBI over his last 40 ABs, proving to be one of the bright spots for a struggling Bears team. Beaumont's Don Drysdale is tops in strikeouts, but is lacking control, allowing 4.7 BB/9IP and a 1.54 WHIP. Even with those inflated numbers, Drysdale is 8-7 this season. Week 11Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1959/standings.htmlHighlights: Louisville's Sam Jones tossed the 2nd 1 hitter of the season on June 17, beating Kansas City 4-2. Jones gave up a solo HR to Bill Bruton for the only hit of the game, and a walk that would eventually score to Orlando Cepeda. Jones has a 10-7 record for the Colonels and is well on his way to a 20 win season. Kansas City and Beaumont locked up in an exciting 15 inning game on June 20, the Blues coming out on top 5-4. The teams were tied at 3 after the 8th inning and remained that way until the Blues scored 2 in the top of the 15th on a HR by Orlando Cepeda, driving in Frank Robinson. Earl Averill struck back for the Exporters in the bottom of the inning with a 1 out solo blast followed by a single by Russ Snyder. Hank Aaron and Charlie Neal each had an opportunity to drive Snyder home and save the day for Beaumont but came up with two long fly ball outs to end the game. Not to be outdone, Amarillo took Montreal to 21 innings on June 21. Also tied at 3 after 8, the Gold Sox and Royals proceeded to put up goose eggs for 12 more innings, until Amarillo broke through in the top of the 21st. Don Blasingame opened up the inning with a single, and then with two outs, Bob Allison and Marv Throneberry laced back to back singles to drive in Blasingame. The Royals loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning for Hal Smith with two outs. Don Demeter was intentionally walked ahead of Smith to load the bases, and the Gold Sox manager made the right choice when Smith lined out to end the ball game. Week 13Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1959/standings.htmlHighlights: Hollywood goes on an 8 game winning streak, the Senators try to match it with a 5 game streak, and both teams end up in a logjam with Louisville in a 3 way tie for 1st place. The Colonels haven't cooled off that much either, going 7-3 over their last 10. Willie McCovey is an AMAZING 20 for 29 over the last 7 games (yep that would be .690) with 5 HR and 12 RBI. Stretch has broken through the .400 barrier, now at .402 for Hollywood. McCovey has a .058 point lead over the next best hitter, Toledo's Jim Landis at .344 . Kansas City's Harmon Killebrew is climbing to the top of the other triple crown categories after piling up 5 HR and 12 RBI in the last 2 weeks. Week 14Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1959/standings.htmlHighlights: E-O-Eleven!, Beaumont's Don Mossi pitches the first no hitter of 1959 on 7/11 against Montreal. The Exporters posted a 3 run lead in the top of the 1st for Mossi, topped off by a 2 run triple off of the bat of Don Hoak. The only base-runner of the game for the Royals reached in the top of the 7th, a walk to Tony Taylor. Taylor stole 2nd, moved to 3rd on a fielders choice, and was then cut down with the infield in on a ground-ball off of the bat of Eddie Mathews. Mossi is 8-7 with a 4.21 ERA this season for the Exporters. Kansas City's Elston Howard is doing his part for the Blues to keep them in them in the playoff race, smacking 6 HR and driving in 15 in his last 40 ABs. The Rookie of the Year award looks like a lock for Hollywood's Willie McCovey, but he's looking for more hardware, a triple crown! McCovey is now on a 14 game hitting streak, maintaining his .400 AVG with 32 H, 13 HR, and 32 RBI in those 14 games. Stretch is 1st in AVG, 2nd in RBI and 4th in HR.
