Semifinal Games 1 and 2Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1959/standingspo.htmlHighlights: Montreal vs. Charleston - MON leads 2-0 The Senators struck first in Game 1, jumping out to a 2-0 in the bottom of the 2nd on a HR by Dave Philley. The lead was short lived as the Royals tied the game in the next half inning on Duke Snider's 2 out bases loaded single. The Royals then put the game away in the top of the 7th, scoring 6 runs on a single by Tito Francona and HRs by Rocky Colavito and Woodie Held. Hoyt Wilhem went the distance for Montreal only allowing 1 more run over the last 3 innings. Game 2 was closely contested, with the teams taking a 2-2 tie into the 9th inning. Charleston brought in their relief ace Ryne Duren to hold the Royals even in the 9th against the bottom of the lineup. Montreal countered with Duke Snider entering the game as a pinch hitter for SP Lew Burdette with 1 out. Snider delivered a solo shot to give Montreal the lead. Bill Henry then came in to record the save, only allowing a harmless leadoff single to Dave Philley. Hollywood vs. Louisville - LCO leads 2-0 Game 1 was an exciting extra inning game highlighted by clutch pitching and missed opportunities at the plate. The teams combined for 21 runners LOB from 21 hits and 11 BBs. The game was all square, 3-3, going into the 11th inning until Al Kaline strode to the plate in the bottom of the inning. With 2 outs, Kaline jumped on a fastball from RP Jim Brosnan and sent it into the stands for a walkoff HR to put the Colonels up 1 game to none. The wind was blowing out of the park at Briggs Stadium for game 2 with 6 batters combining for 8 HRs in a 16-10 Colonels victory. Louisville recorded 6 of the HRs including 2 from Gil Hodges. Hodges had 5 RBI on the 2 HRs, the second a grand slam to extend the Colonels lead in the 6th inning. MVP candidate Willie McCovey had 2 HRs for the Stars, driving in 6, including a grand slam in the 8th, but it wasn't enough to overcome the huge day at the plate by the Colonels. Semifinal Games 3, 4, and 5Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1959/standingspo.htmlHighlights: Montreal vs. Charleston - MON leads 3-2 Charleston scored 5 runs early to get out to a lead and the eventual victory in game 3 in Montreal. Larry Sherry pitched a 6 hit complete game in the 8-4 win. Gene Freese had a HR and 3 RBI, Minnie Minoso had 2 RBI and 2 RS to lock up the win. Montreal opened up game 4 by sending 8 batters to the plate in the 1st inning scoring 4 runs. The Senators rallied to tie the series, putting up crooked numbers in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings. After the 3 inning rally, Charleston had an 8-6 lead and added an insurance run in the 9th to tie the series at 2-2. Jim Gilliam scored 3 times for Charleston and Lee Maye drove in 3 runs in the game. Home field advantage finally held up in game 5 breaking the streak of visiting team victories in the series. In a very exciting game, runs were hard to come by with the teams taking a 1-1 tie into the 12th inning. Lew Burdette and Billy Pierce pitched terrific games for their teams through 8 innings before turning the ball over to their bullpens. Charleston broke the tie in the 12th on a 2 out single by Sherm Lollar driving in Gene Freese who led off the inning with a single. In the bottom of the inning the Senators brought in Ryne Duren after a leadoff single by Roger Maris to lock up the save, but Duren couldn't get the job done. Duren gave up a walk and 3 hits in the 2/3rds of an inning capped off by a bases loaded 2 out walkoff single by Rocky Colavito. Montreal takes a 3-2 lead back to Charleston for game 6. Hollywood vs. Louisville - LCO wins 4-1 Game 3 started with the Colonels jumping out to an early lead with 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning, extending it to a 5-2 lead after 6 innings. Johnny Logan went 5-5 leading off for the Colonels on the day and was backed up by Al Kaline with 4 hits and Jim Lemon with 3. The run support was plenty for Art Ditmar who threw a complete game allowing 8 hits and 2 runs. Hollywood dug deep in game 4 facing elimination and set the tone in the bottom if the opening inning, plating 4 runs on 2R HRs by Willie McCovey and Wally Moon. Ned Garver went 8 innings and handed the ball over to Johnny Podres for the save. Hollywood did their best in game 5 to make a series out of it, but couldn't match the Colonels offense. The Stars scratched together 13 base-runners but could only convert 3 of them into runs, which wasn't enough to keep up with Louisville. The Colonels smacked 17 hits including HRs by Johnny Logan(3rd), Jim Lemon(2nd), and Gus Triandos(2nd). Sam Jones pitched 8 1/3 for the win. Fianl Games 1 and 2Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1959/standingspo.htmlHighlights: Montreal vs. Louisville - MON leads 2-0 Montreal's Hoyt Wilhelm and Louisville's Vern Law pitched strong games to open up the series, a CG for Law and 8 2/3 for Wilhelm. It was a game of missed opportunities for the Colonels, out hitting the Royals but leaving 10 runners on base, 4 in scoring position and runners on 1st and 3rd in the bottom of the 9th. All of the runs came on solo HRs, 2 each for Montreal's Duke Snider and Louisville's Ken Boyer. Eddie Mathews and Roger Maris also cleared the fences for Montreal. Fianl Games 3, 4 and 5Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1959/standingspo.htmlHighlights: Montreal vs. Louisville - LCO leads 3-2 Homefield has meant very little this post season, with the visitors posting a 12-4 record through 16 games. Montreal took advantage of the trend in games 1 and 2, and the Colonels benefited equally in games 3, 4 and 5. Game 3 featured a dominating performance from Louisville's Al Ditmar. Ditmar allowed 3 hits and 1 walk in the 6-0 complete game victory. The Colonels scored in the first inning and didn't look back, with Al Kaline knocking his 5th HR in the post season, scoring twice and driving in 3 runs. Watch Game 3Louisville kept the momentum in game 4, scoring 5 big runs in the top of the second to set the tone for the game. The Colonels pushed runs across the plate on a bases loaded single by Eddie Kasko and a bases loaded triple by Joe Koppe (in the lineup for the injured Johnny Logan). Montreal rallied in the 3rd and 4th, scoring 2 runs in each inning on clutch base hits by Eddie Mathews and Woodie Held to keep the game close. The Colonels would have no part of a close game, scoring 5 more runs over the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings with offense being generated from all parts of the lineup. Montreal's hitting couldn't keep up and the contest ended with the series tied 2-2. Watch Game 4Both teams were looking to win the critical game 5 and played up to the task, the game was close throughout. Tito Francona and Roger Maris homered for Montreal, driving in 2 runs each. Gus Triandos doubled twice driving in 3 runs and Jim Lemon homered driving in 2 for Louisville. The teams went back and forth for all 9 innings, and with the game on the line the Colonels bullpen rose to the occasion. After a PH RBI from the Royals Bob Cerv in the bottom of the 8th, Bob Purkey was brought in and retired Tony Taylor to end the rally. In the 9th, after a leadoff single from Francona, Tom Brewer put out the fire getting Eddie Mathews to popout and Rocky Colavito to ground into a game ending double play. Final Game 6Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1959/standingspo.htmlHighlights: Montreal vs. Louisville - LCO wins 4-2 In a thrilling game 6, Jim Lemon channeled the future Reggie Jackson and crushed 3 HRs to power Louisville to the championship. Montreal battled to the end, rallying in their final at bat to tie the game and send it into extra innings. Down 3-1 in the 9th, Tito Francona led off with a solo shot to close the lead to 1 run. Eddie Mathews and Rocky Colavito walked and singled to put the go ahead runner on base for the Royals, when the Colonels once again brought in Tom Brewer to put out the fire. Brewer got Duke Snider to ground into a DP moving Mathews to 3rd, but with two outs, Roger Maris connected with a triple to tie the game. The Royals post season hero, Woodie Held delivered next, a clean base hit to plate Maris and give the Royals the lead. The Colonels bounced right back in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a leadoff PH HR by backup catcher Johnny Romano to erase the Royals lead. Montreal went down in order in the 10th, and the crowd was electric knowing that Lemon would be coming up in the bottom half. Charlie Maxwell walked to open the inning and the stage was set. Lemon HR'd in his 1st two ABs of the day and was 3-3 with a BB when he came to the plate. Lemon sealed the championship with his 3rd blast of the day, giving the Colonels the 6-4 victory. What a game! Watch Game 6Daily Recaps and League File - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1950kp/1959/leaguefilesplayoffs/final_3.zip
