The Mounties led off the inning down 9-3 and put together back to back 2-out HRs by Bob Allison and Don Mincher before the final out was recorded by the Beavers Bill Dailey. Mincher and Allison both had 2 HRs in the game, but it was not enough thanks to Johnny Blanchard's 4 RBIs and Willie Mays 3 RS. The ball was flying out of the park with the teams combining for 7 HRs. Game 2 proved to be a day of missed opportunities for Vancouver and timely pitching by Portland. The Mounties left 14 runners on base in the 3-0 loss to SP Jack Kralick. Kralick pitched out of jams in almost every inning to record the victory. SOUTH Divisional Championship - Tidewater vs. Louisville - series tied 1-1 Tidewater's Jim Maloney and Camilo Pascual were able to quiet the Colonels bats in the opening 2 games of the series, holding them to 7 runs in 2 games. The Tides pulled together enough offense to win the opening game against Sandy Koufax 5-3, but could only push 1 run across the plate against Dick Ellsworth in the game 2 defeat. World Series Games 1 and 2Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1963ps/standings1.htmlHighlights: Portland vs. Louisville - POR leads 2-0 Portland kept the Colonels on their heels for both of the games to open the series in Louisville. The Beavers pitching was dominant leading to a sweep on the road and a 2-0 advantage heading back to Portland. Starting pitchers Dick Ellsworth and Bob Friend led their teams into the 9th inning of game 1 with the score tied at 1-1. Neither team had much success at the plate through that point in the game, until Portland was able to string together 2 base hits and 2 walks, ending with the final run of the game scoring on a base on balls to Gus Triandos. The teams combined for 12 hits and 14 strikeouts. Ron Kline picked up the W for the Beavers, pitching scoreless 8th and 9th innings. Game 2 featured even less offense, with the only run of the game coming off of the bat of Portland's Willie Mays, a solo HR in the 4th inning. That was all SP Jack Kralick needed, tossing a CG shutout with 7 hits and 1 BB. Louisville's Sandy Koufax out-pitched Kralick in the loss, tossing a 3 hitter and striking out 8. Koufax made one mistake the entire game, and Mays made it count. World Series Games 3, 4 and 5Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1963ps/standings1.htmlHighlights: Portland vs. Louisville - POR leads 3-2 Louisville battled back in games 3 and 4 erasing the sweep in their home stadium, drawing the series even at 2-2. The Colonels blew open game 3 with 4 runs in the 6th and 3 more in the 7th on the way to an important win. Ed Bailey, Bill White and SP Milt Pappas all went yard for Louisville putting the game out of reach in the 7th. Pappas also pitched 7 innings to record the win, swinging the momentum away from the Beavers. Louisville jumped out quickly to set the tone for game 4, sending 8 batters to the plate in the 1st inning, capped of by a HR by Ed Bailey to open up a 4 run lead. That's all SP Dick Ellsworth needed, holding Portland to 2 runs on 4 hits for the CG victory. The Colonels decisive win set up the teams for a pivotal game 5. Fans from both teams were treated to one of the best games of the 60s, watching Sandy Koufax and Jack Kralick exceed their game 2 exploits with remarkable outings on the mound. Koufax left the bump after 11 innings of shutout ball, striking out 11 and only allowing 6 hits. Kralick delivered an even more impressive performance for the Beaver's, also tossing 11 scoreless innings, allowing only 2 hits with 8 Ks. Both pitchers gave their all with the season on the line, leaving with matching no decisions. Portland turned the ball over to Bill Dailey, who was 12-5 on the season out of the bullpen for the Beavers with a 2.15 ERA. Dailey proceeded to hit the first batter he faced, watch a ground ball go through Wayne Causey's legs, and then duck from a clean base hit up the middle off of the bat of Carl Yastrzemski to give the Colonels a 1-0 going into the bottom of the inning. Louisville brought in their closer Hal Woodeshick to seal the game, coming off of a regular season 9-4 record with 11 saves, 1.85 ERA and 0.82 WHIP. All went as planned, with Woodeshick retiring the 1st 2 batters, but Portland wasn't ready to concede. The Beavers rallied with 2 outs on a single and 2 BBs to Ernie Banks, Gus Triandos and Ron Hunt, giving the goat from the top of the inning, Causey, the chance to redeem himself. After some discussion in the dugout, Causey was sent to the plate and DELIVERED! A clean walkoff double, driving in 2 runs and locking up the win for Portland. Post Season Game Of The NightKoufax and Kralick both go 11 innings in another epic pitchers duel in game 5Daily Recaps and League File - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1963/leaguefilesplayoffs/final_2.zip

World Series Games 6 and 7Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1963ps/standings1.htmlHighlights: Portland vs. Louisville - POR wins 4-3 Lousiville's bats responded while facing elimination in game 6, posting crooked numbers in 3 of the first 4 innings opening up an 8 run lead thanks to HRs by Felix Mantilla and Ed Bailey. Hal Woodeshick closed the game with 3 strong innings, bouncing back from the tough loss in game 5 to send the series to game 7. With the championship on the line, both teams battled mightily in a closely contested game. Louisville went out to an early lead scoring a run in the 2nd and 3rd innings, but didn't cash in completely on the opportunity, leaving a combined 5 runners on base in the 2 innings. The Beavers scratched a run across the plate in the 5th, and then another to tie the game in the 8th on a solo shot by Willie Mays. The Colonels answered back in the bottom of the 8th to take a 3-2 lead on a 2 out base hit by Carl Yastrzemski, driving in Albie Pearson. Louisville decided to leave the game in the hands of their 24 win pitcher, Dick Ellsworth, in the top of the 9th with the 1 run lead. The inning unraveled quickly for Ellsworth, walking leadoff hitter Ernie Banks, watching a grounder get booted by Zoilo Versalles, giving up a sac bunt to Ron Hunt, and then a pinch hit 2 RBI single to Jerry Lynch, giving the Beavers the lead, 4-3. Portland failed to rally in the bottom of the 9th after watching the lead that they had held most of the game evaporate, stranding Brooks Robinson on 1st base after his 2 out single.
