Week 2Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1964/standings.htmlHighlights: Louisville continued the hitting clinic, winning by 2 touchdowns in a 14-0 blowout of the Tides. The offensive display was led with HRs by Felix Mantilla(5th), Tony Oliva(7th), and Zoilo Versalles(3rd). On the mound, Sandy Koufax retired 13 on strikes in an easy victory. The Colonels are now 12-2 and appear to be well on their way to another strong season. Toledo’s Lou Brock and Charleston’s Rico Carty are both on a 12 game hitting streak, both now batting over .300 . Phoenix’s Harmon Killebrew and Portland’s Wayne Causey have hits in 13 of the 14 games so far, with Causey logging multi-hit games in 8 of the contests, Killebrew in 7. Week 3Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1964/standings.htmlHighlights: Phoenix and Charleston battled for 16 innings in the game of the week, with the Giants outlasting the Senators for a 6-5 victory on 4/20. Phoenix scored 2 runs in the top of the 16th and thought the game was in hand, but a Charleston rally in the bottom of the inning had the tying run in scoring position with 1 out, only to be left stranded for the home team. Louisville’s Boog Powell, not normally known for his speed on the base paths, crossed the plate 5 times in a 13-4 blowout of the Bisons. Brooks Robinson drove in 6 on the day in another impressive offensive performance by Louisville. Robinson now has 18 RBIs in his last 40 PAs. Hawaii’s Joe Adcock is slugging the long ball regularly for the Islanders with 6 HRs in his last 34 ABs. Richmond has a bullpen full of aces to send to the mound so far this season. The Braves are leading the league with a team ERA of 1.97, a full run better than the next best staff, and have 3 of the top 5 individual ERAs with Eddie Fisher posting an amazing 0.32 ERA after his first 4 starts. Week 4Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1964/standings.htmlHighlights: Tidewater played in 3 high scoring games this week, losing 14-3 against the Mounties on 4/29, and splitting 2 games with Portland, a 13-8 win on 5/1 and an 11-8 loss on 5/3. The Tides are in the cellar in the South, but are 6-4 over their last 10 and are beginning to climb up the standings. Three different hitters went 5-5 this week. Hawaii’s Bert Campaneris had 2 doubles, scoring 3 runs and driving in 3 on 4/28. Tidewater’s Chuck Hinton had a HR and 2 doubles on 4/30, and his teammate Vada Pinson (lucky to be on the roster!!!!) knocking 2 HRs on 5/3. Pinson is on fire for the Tides, 15-26 at the plate over his last 5 games with 5 HR, 8 RBI and 9 RS. There were a pair of 1 hitters this week. Buffalo’s Gene Cisco allowed only a triple to Curt Flood in the Bison 2-1 win over Phoenix on 5/1, and Charleston rookie Luis Tiant took a no hitter into the 8th on 4/27 in a 13-0 win, Portland’s Wayne Causey smacking a clean double to deliver the Beavers only hit of the game. Week 5Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1964/standings.htmlHighlights: Denver and Charleston lock up in the season’s longest game to date on 5/9; going 17 innings with the Senators earning the victory on a walk off 2 out single by Russ Snyder. Denver used 8 pitchers in the game and the teams combined for 36 hits and 31 runners LOB. Snyder had a league high 9 ABs in the game, recording 3 hits. Montreal is on an 8 game winning streak and has climbed into a tie with Toledo for the lead in the North. The Royals best hitter so far is Roger Maris who leads the team in hits, HRs, RBIs, Rs and GWRBI. On the mound, Montreal’s best hurler is Al Jackson, posting a 5-0 record in 6 starts with a 1.47 ERA and 0.90 WHIP. Louisville is dominating the South, now with a 25-8 record, leading in almost every team batting category and currently 4th in team ERA. Brooks Robinson in setting the pace for the Colonels, batting .426 and in the midst of a 25 game hitting streak. Week 8Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1964/standings.htmlHighlights: We have a terrific race forming in the North, 4 teams all within 1 game of first place. Vancouver and Montreal share the lead followed closely by Toledo and Portland. Toledo is the hottest team out of the 4 this week, winning 7 out of the last 9, spearheaded by Johnny Callison. Callison is 8 for 27 with 3 HR and 8 RBI since being shifted to the cleanup spot on Monday, he currently leads the league in RBIs (55). Callison had been hitting .359 from the 5 hole. Charleston’s Lee Maye went 6 for 6 against Phoenix on 5/25, smacking a HR, a double, and driving in 6 in a 10-5 win over the Giants. The game went 10 innings but was ended quickly by the Senators who posted 5 runs in the top of the 10th to secure the win. Hawaii’s Larry Jackson has won 8 out of his last 9 starts for the Islanders, propelling them to second place in the South. Jackson is 2nd in the league in victories and has pitched 20 consecutive shutout innings over his last 2 outings. Week 9Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1964/standings.htmlHighlights: Week 9 didn’t show a lot of movement in the North, same order at the top as last week with the top 4 teams going 3-4 on the week. Louisville is now 40-19 on the season with a comfortable 8 game lead already and it’s only the first week in June. Toledo’s Chris Short had his best stuff on 6/6, striking out a season high 14 in 7 2/3 innings against Portland. Short ended up with a no decision as the game went into extra innings, with the Beavers claiming the win in 11. Louisville’s Sandy Koufax recorded his 14th win this week, and has a 4 W lead on the 2nd best total of Hawaii’s Larry Jackson. The Colonels Brooks Robinson continues to lead the league in hitting, now at .375, with Richmond’s Roberto Clemente beginning to close the gap in 2nd place and Charleston’s Joe Torre close behind in 3rd, both batting over .360. Week 13Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1964/standings.htmlHighlights: We’ve reached the All-Star break and we have a great 4 team race in the works in both divisions, battling for 1st in the North and 2nd in the South. Vancouver served Louisville a taste of their own medicine on 6/30, plating 19 runs in 24 hits in a 19-8 victory. The Mounties had every position player record at least 2 hits with Donn Clendenon driving in a game high 5 RBIs and Jim Ray Hart had 2 HRs. All Star Game1964 All Star GameHighlights: The North All Stars defeated the South All Stars 4-3 thanks to an exciting late game rally. Louisville's Sandy Koufax and Toledo's Chris Short went to the mound as the starting pitchers, both throwing 2 scoreless innings. The South pushed single runs across in the 5th and 6th inning to take an early lead, but the North bats woke up in the top of the 8th scoring 3 runs to take the lead. Portland's Willie Mays delivered a pinch hit 2 RBI triple in the inning and then scored on a 2 out base hit by Buffalo's Hank Aaron. The South bounced back in the bottom of the 8th, knotting the game at 3-3 on a pinch hit solo HR by Richmond's Hal Lanier. The North surged ahead for good in the top of the 9th on a base hit by Portland's Wayne Causey, driving in Toledo's Dick Allen, who had reached earlier in the inning on a 2 base error. The North brought in Vancouver's Ed Roebuck and Montreal's Don Mossi in the 9th to close out the game and secure the win. Mays was named the game MVP, responsible for 3 of the North's 4 runs.
