Week 14Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1965/standings.htmlHighlights: Toledo has won 8 out of their last 10 and has some breathing room in the North, a 6 game lead over Vancouver and Montreal. Denver and Tidewater played the longest game of the season so far, an 18 inning contest 0n 7/8 that was decided on a walkoff single by Chuck Hinton. The Tides have played 6 extra inning games in their last 11, including 4 in a row earlier in July. Tidewater is 2-4 in those games. Two players had 3 HR games this week, Denver's Dick Stuart on 7/6 and Charleston's Eddie Mathews on 7/11. Mathews has 15 HRs this year, Stuart now has 13. Tidewater's Jim Maloney tossed the 4th 1 hitter of the season on 7/7, in a 3-0 win over Denver. Maloney struck out 12 and walked 5. Week 16Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1965/standings.htmlHighlights: Louisville steps on the accelerator and pulls away in the South. The Colonel's are on a 12 game winning streak and have opened up an 11 game lead over Charleston and Phoenix. Louisville is well on their way to 4th consecutive division title and are on pace for a 110 win season. The Giants and Senators have the second best records in the league and still can't keep pace with the dynasty out of the Bluegrass state. Toledo's Juan Marichal picked up 2 more wins this week and is leading all pitchers with 18. Marichal has a chance to pick up # 20 before August 1st. Portland's Willie Mays continues to drive the ball out of the park, knocking 4 more HRs this week, bringing his league leading total to 44. All 4 post season berths are almost set, the last few weeks look to be playing out the string and chasing individual milestones. Speaking of individual milestones, 2 more 1 hitter were thrown this week, bringing the total to 8 near misses. Both 1 hitters were tossed on 9/3. Tidewater's Jim Maloney tallied his 18th win for the Tides in a 2-1 win over Hawaii. Maloney had 12 Ks and 5 walks in the outing and recorded his 300th K of the season. Toledo's Juan Marichal spun the 2nd 1 hitter, a 2-0 win over Denver. Marichal increased his win total to 24, helping the Hens stay ahead of the Mounties in the North. Portland's Willie Mays crossed the 60 HR mark this week, continuing to be the bright spot for the Beavers. Week 23Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1965/standings.htmlHighlights: With 2 weeks remaining, Montreal is making one last push to catch Vancouver, now just 4 games behind. The Royals have won 10 out of the last 12 and has picked up 5 games on the Mounties over that span. The two teams face off in the last week of the season, so the Royals still have a chance to reel the Mounties in. Tidewater set two single game season records this week in a blowout victory over the Senators. The Tides scored 20 runs on 23 hits on 9/7 in a 15 run victory and were led by Norm Cash who hit a homer and double, scoring 3 times and driving in runs. Toledo's Maury Wills and Lou Brock have paired up for 232 SBs, Wills with 134 and Brock 2 swipes away from 100 at 98. Louisville reached the 100 win mark this week with 13 games left to play. 110 wins is not out of the question. Week 24Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1965/standings.htmlHighlights: Anything can still happen in the North race for the 2nd playoff berth, only 3 games separate Vancouver and Montreal, the two teams face each other in a 3 game match-up this week in Vancouver. Louisville's Sam McDowell threw his 2nd 1 hitter on the year, a 4-0 win over Phoenix. McDowell whiffed 12 and didn't walk a single batter in another stellar outing, retiring the last 25 batters he faced. He has 23 wins and 375 Ks and is a leading candidate for MVP and Cy Young awards. The Colonels now stand at 105 wins with 7 games left to play. Portland's Willie Mays had another great week and is at 66 HR and 141 RBIs. 70/150 is still in his reach. Final StandingsStandings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1965/standings.htmlHighlights: Congratulations to the playoff teams: North (1) Toledo (2) Vancouver South (1) Louisville (2) Phoenix Toledo and Vancouver swap playoff seeds from last season, winning with a 7 game advantage. The divisional series should be exciting with Mounties holding a 10-8 regular season advantage over the Hens. Louisville repeats as the South division champion for the 4th consecutive year with Phoenix ending up in the runner-up spot for a second season in a row, their 5th season in 3rd place or better. The Colonels fell 1 win short of 110 wins setting a record for single season win at 109, 11 more wins than any other team this decade. The Giants finished a very strong year as well, quietly running up their win total to 98, 11 games back of Louisville. The Colonels are the heavy favorites having a winning record against all of the playoff teams this year. The team that gave Louisville the toughest time were the Senators who played .500 against them ending up a distant 3rd in the South. Individual batting highlights include, Louisville's Tony Oliva winning his 2nd batting title in a row, hitting .375, .043 points higher than his teammate in 2nd place, Brooks Robinson. Portland's Willie Mays reached 2 milestones the final week of the season, ending up with a league best 71 HRs and 151 RBI. Buffalo's Hank Aaron reached the 50 double mark and Toledo's Dick Allen finished with 21 triples. Two batters cleared the 200 hit mark, Charleston's Pete Rose and Louisville's Brooks Robinson each knocked 209 hits. In individual pitching performances, six hurlers had 20 or more wins, led by Phoenix's Fred Newman and Toledo's Juan Marichal with 25. Louisville's Sam McDowell struck out 389, most likely 1 start shy of reaching 400. 3 other pitchers also had 300 Ks, including Tidewater's Jim Maloney with 350. Louisville's Sandy Koufax finished with a sub 1.00 WHIP (at 0.99) and finished 3rd in wins with 24 and 3rd in strikeouts with 329. Charleston's Bob Miller was the most reliable out of the pen saving 32 games for the Senators, 11 more than the next best closer.
