The Hens were outdone by the Buffalo Bisons who swiped 15 in the first week of the season, with 5 runners recording a steal. Louisville's bats started the season where they left off in 1964, with a team batting average of .315 and a league high 43 RS. Richmond's Pete Reichert booked two terrific starts, back to back CG shutouts victories for the only two wins for the Braves in week 1. Toledo's Juan Marichal pitched a 1 hitter on 4/5, completing a 3-0 opening day victory over Vancouver. Marichal struck out 8 and walked 1 in the outing. Week 2Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1965/standings.htmlHighlights: A missed highlight from week 1! Louisville's Sam McDowell struck out 19 on 4/10 in a win against Phoenix. The Colonels scored 14 runs in the victory and gave McDowell plenty of room to reach back and throw. McDowell allowed 6 hits and walked 8 in the game. Portland and Toledo took turns missing opportunities on 4/15, in a Mud Hen 5-4 victory. The teams combined for 29 hits but only managed to push 9 runners across the plate, leaving a combined 20 runners on base, including 15 in scoring position. The Colonels Brooks Robinson is off to a quick start, batting .442 with 6 multi-hit games and 2 4 hit performances and 12 RBI. The Tides also put up 11 runs against Louisville on 4/19, totaling 49 runs in 6 games this week, including a 5 RS game by Norm Cash on 4/23. Tim Haller and the Royals bounced back from the drubbing by Tidewater with two wins against Richmond, led by Haller with 7 RBIs. Richmond's Don Buford swiped 4 bases against Hawaii on 4/19, scoring twice in a 6-3 victory over the Islanders. Phoenix is on a 5 game winning streak, 8-2 in the last 10 and have pulled even with Louisville in the South with a 14-6 record. Week 4Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1965/standings.htmlHighlights: Louisville climbs back to the top of the league at 19-8 with Phoenix only trailing by 2 games as the post season teams from last year carry the momentum into 1965. The Colonels bats are tops once again, leading all teams in HRs, RBI's, RS, triples, and second in doubles. Carl Yastrzemski, Tony Oliva, and Brooks Robinson are all batting over .370 for the Colonels. Phoenix's Fred Newman is a perfect 7-0 in 7 starts with 7 quality starts for the Giants. Newman's ERA is 2.21 ans is getting over 5 runs/game in run support from the Giant's lumber. Hawaii's Gordy Coleman is in the groove over his last 10 games, batting .560 in 25 ABs, one of the only highlights for the struggling Islanders lineup. Their 27 wins is 4 more than the next highest, they have the top 4 hitters batting averages led by Tony Oliva (.398) and the top two hurlers strikeout totals from Sandy Koufax and Sam McDowell. Hawaii destroyed the Senators on 5/13, 17-2. The Islanders had 20 hits in the game, 7 batters had a multi-hit game and 4 had HRs. Tommy John spread out 10 hits allowing only 2 runs in the win. Toledo's Bob Gibson pitched an 11 inning complete game, striking out 15, en-route to a 5-4 win over the Royals on 5/15. The winning run was driven in by Gibson's battery mate, Bob Uecker, with a 2 out single in the 11th. Vancouver, Toledo and Montreal have opened up a 4 game gap over 4th place but only 7 games separate 1st and last in the division. Louisville is beginning to run away with the division again in the South, now with a 9 game lead over 2nd place Phoenix and Charleston. Vancouver's Bob Allison has 7 HRs in his last 35 ABs for the Mounties, helping them to wins in 5 of their last 6 and 1st place in the North. Louisville's Sam McDowell tossed the 3rd 1 hitter of the year, in a 2-0 win over Portland. McDowell rang up 16 Ks on the way to 7 2/3 innings of no hit ball and now has a 17 K lead over Colonel's teammate Sandy Koufax in the strike out race. Portland's Willie Mays now has 29 HRs and 60 RBI, leading both categories and is averaging a HR per game over the last 8 games. Toledo is leading the North by a 1 game thanks to Maury Wills 64 SB and Juan Marichal's 13 victories. Marichal has a leagues best 1.80 ERA in addition to the best win total and quality starts (15). All Star Game1965 All Star GameHighlights: The North All Stars defeated the South All Stars 9-5 overcoming 5 errors on the way to the victory. Toledo's Maury Wills jump started the North in the bottom of the 1st with a base-hit, stolen base (to third on an error), scoring on a Jim Gilliam ground out. Gilliam's Montreal teammate, Willie McCovey, followed with a solo HR to open up a 2-0 lead. The South rallied, scoring in consecutive innings to take a 4-2 lead into the 5th, only to have the North strike back for 4 runs in the bottom if the inning to take the lead for good. The North parlayed 4 walks and 2 base hits in the 5th to plate the 4 runs, with the final 2 coming off the bat of Wills with the bases loaded 2 out single.
