Two blowouts this week, setting the two highest individual team run totals in a game. Portland posted 19 runs on the 4th of July against Louisville in a 19-5 win led by Willie Mays with 7 RBI, followed by Tidewater scoring 18 against Denver on 7/5 in an 18-3 win (the Tides 9th double digit single game offensive result, most of all teams). Louisville's Boog Powell has the hottest bat since the all star break, batting .469 with 5 HR and 10 RBI, helping move the Colonels into 2nd place in the South. Powell has 14 GWRBI, tops in that category across all teams. Week 15Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1966/standings.htmlHighlights: Tidewater hits a rough patch as their offense cools off, losing 8 out of 11 including a sweep by the Bisons. The Tides are now in a tie with the Colonels in the South. In the 7/15 match-up between Buffalo and Tidewater, the Bison's Gary Bell whiffed 14 on the way to a 3-0 win. Vancouver's Frank Robinson is closing in on the triple crown, leading in batting (.318) and HRs (39) and only 5 RBIs (74) away from the third jewel. Charleston's Luis Tiant has the lowest ERA in the league, the only sub 2.00 number at 1.88. Tiant is 11-6 for the Senators helping them stay above .500 in the South. Hawaii has two of the top base-runners with Sonny Jackson and Bert Campenaris combing for 102 SBs so far. Buffalo is outpacing all teams with 136 SBs, 4 different players have 29 or more swipes. Week 16Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1966/standings.htmlHighlights: Vancouver is 15-7 in July so far, now with a 5 game lead over Portland in the North. Denver's Orlando Cepeda drove in all 8 runs on 7/23 in an 8-0 Bears win over the Royals. Cepeda was 3-4 on the day with a Grand Slam and a 3 run HR. Montreal's Dave Boswell posted what could be the best pitching performance of the season. In a 2-0 12 inning win, Boswell pitched 11 innings, allowing only 1 hit and striking out 16. Boswell earned the win when the Royals scored 2 runs in the top of the 12th, allowing him to hand the ball over to Lindy McDaniel for the save. Week 17Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1966/standings.htmlHighlights: July comes to an end with the Senators on a hot streak trying to climb back into the race in the South, 8-2 in the last 10 and now just 2 games behind the Colonels for 2nd place. One game separates three teams in the North for second place, Portland holding on to a 1 game advantage over Toledo and Montreal. Denver and Toledo tangled for 17 innings on 7/28, with the Bears coming out on top 5-4, the GWRBI coming off of the bat of Art Shamsky in the top of the 17th. This was the 10th game of 15 or more innings this year. Vancouver's Frank Robinson continues to chase the Triple Crown, still only coming up short in batting, 2nd behind Denver's Manny Mota. Montreal's Mike Cuellar is 1 victory away from being the first pitcher to 20 wins thanks to complete game wins in his last 3 starts. Montreal has moved into a clear 2nd place in the North, winning 5 in a row and 9 out of 10. The Royals are 5 games behind Vancouver, but have built a 2 game lead over 3rd place Toledo. Week 19Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1966/standings.htmlHighlights: Richmond and Montreal played 18 innings on 8/9, with the Braves coming out on top 3-2 thanks to a solo walk-off HR by Roberto Clemente. The game was Richmond's 3rd contest of 18 or more innings, they are 2-1 in the double duration games. The Braves are 11-3 in August and are beginning to climb back towards the .500 mark, just 5 games behind 2nd place Louisville. Clemente is working on a 17 game hitting streak for the Braves. Vancouver's Frank Robinson has established a beachhead for the triple crown! He's now 1st in all 3 categories after batting .390 in his last 41 ABs with 8 HR and 12 RBI, reaching the 50 HR and 100 RBI milestones. Montreal's Mike Cuellar reached a pitching milestone this week, recording his 20th win. Louisville's Sandy Koufax pitched his 2nd 15 K game of the season on 9/6 against Richmond. Koufax now has 310 strikeouts, amassing 300 or more for the 6th consecutive year. Tidewater's Jim Maloney and Vancouver's Claude Osteen reached 20 wins this week, and Montreal's Willie McCovey passed the 100 RBI mark. Robinson's biggest threat is Richmond's Roberto Clemente who is batting .425 over his last 40 ABs and is closing the season in strong fashion, .013 behind. Final StandingsStandings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1966/standings.htmlHighlights: Congratulations to the playoff teams: North (1) Vancouver (2) Montreal South (1) Tidewater (2) Louisville Montreal and Louisville held on to their slim runner up leads to claim the 2nd playoff spot in their respective divisions, as Vancouver and Tidewater went unchallenged for the pennants. In the North, The Mounties have now reached the playoffs for 5 consecutive seasons and Montreal are making their second post season appearance, their first coming in the decade's inaugural season. Vancouver holds a 10-8 regular season advantage with a very close +3 run differential in head to head games. Vancouver will be sending an offensive minded team against the pitching/hitting balance of the Royals in an exciting pairing. Similarly in the South, Louisville has qualified for their 5 post season in a row, with Tidewater chalking up their 2nd playoff appearance. The Tides hold a slightly larger advantage than the teams in the North in head to head competition, with an 11-7 advantage over the Colonels, separated by only a +4 run differential. The Colonels will be relying on their league leading pitching staff to hold off the prolific Tidewater lineup. Strength against strength which will make a very competitive series. At the plate, Vancouver's Frank Robinson completed his Triple Crown campaign with room to spare in all categories, .008 in batting, 24 HRs and 25 RBI. Robinson finished with a individual season record 72 HRs, 1 better then the 71 hit by Mickey Mantle 1961 and Willie Mays in 1965. Only Richmond's Roberto Clemente was able to surpass the 200 hit mark, ending up with 203 for the Braves. Hawaii's Sonny Jackson fell just short of the 100 SB mark with 96 for the Islanders. On the mound, Montreal's Mike Cuellar recorded 27 wins, the second highest single season total in the decade behind Louisville's Sandy Koufax and his 29 in 1964. Koufax was the only pitcher to record 300 Ks in 1966, finishing with 334 which paired up nicely with his 24 victories, league lowest 2.21 ERA and 0.93 WHIP for the Colonels. 1966 was Koufax's 6th consecutive season of 300+ strikeouts.
