Tidewater's Adolfo Phillips is swinging for the fences, with a league leading 4 HRs and 9 RBIs. It's feast of famine for Phillips, going 5-29, with 4 of the hits being HRs, one of the dingers was a grand slam. Toledo is off to a fast start, 6-1 in the first week of games, accumulating a +15 RunDiff and a 3-0 record in 1 run games. Week 2Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1966/standings.htmlHighlights: Lot's of great individual and team performances this week, leading off with a no-hitter! Buffalo's Mel Stottlemyre tossed the first no hitter of the season, striking out 4 and walking 3 on the way to a 3-0 win over Montreal on 4/11. Louisville's Sandy Koufax whiffed 15 Tides on 4/17 in a 4-0 victory on 4/17. Koufax allowed 2 hits and 3 walks in the win. Buffalo's Jose Cardenal stole a season high 4 bases on 4/17 against the Mud Hens, giving Toledo a taste of their own medicine on the way to a 6-4 win. Louisville and Richmond battled for 21 innings to decide a winner on 4/13, with the Braves coming out on top 5-4. Vancouver wore out the base-paths on 4/12, plating 18 runs on 22 hits in an 18-5 destruction of Portland. Frank Robinson crushed 3 HRs for the Mounties going 4-6 on the day with 5 RBI and 3 RS. Week 3Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1966/standings.htmlHighlights: Louisville's Joe Morgan set a season best in runs scored on 4/21 against Portland, crossing the plate 4 times and going 4-4 batting in a double digit win over the Beavers. Also for the Colonels, Carl Yastrzemski and Boog Powell top the RBI table with 17 each and Sandy Koufax tops the strikeout list with 51. Toledo's Bill White has 10 game hitting streak, helping to power the Hens to first place in the North, 7-3 over that stretch of games. It was Koufax's 5th W this season, tallying almost half of the Colonel's total victories. Charleston's Luis Tiant has the lowest ERA in the league at 0.99 with a 0.84 WHIP. Tiant is 3-2 for the Senators who are under-performing terribly so far this season. Vancouver's Frank Robinson leads a Hall OF Fame list of hitters in the HR table with 11, followed at 9 HRs by Hank Aaron, Harmon Killebrew and Mickey Mantle. Week 5Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1966/standings.htmlHighlights: Richmond played it's second 20+ inning game of the year on 5/3, this time in a 3-2 loss to Portland. The Braves pitching staff is worn out, having 3 out of 4 games go extra innings between 5/1 and 5/5. 40 players appeared in the game, with the GWRBI coming from Jim Davenport's sacrifice fly in the top of the 20th for the Beavers. 13 pitchers combined to allow only 24 hits in the 40 half innings. Toledo's Dick Allen has a .030 lead in the batting race for the league best Mud Hens, batting .356 with a 12.7 RC27, also the best of all batters. Buffalo's Hank Aaron has 6 GWRBI so far for the Bison's helping them keep pace in the North. Week 6Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1966/standings.htmlHighlights: Montreal has won 12 of 13 and Vancouver has won 8 of 10, helping both teams close in on Toledo. The Hens now have a 1 game lead over the Royals and a 2 game lead over the Mounties. The Royals are being led by performances on the mound over that stretch, and have arguably one of the best pitching staffs in the league. The Mounties have taken a different path to get back into the race, relying on their bats. They are 2nd in HRs, OPS, Doubles and RS out of all teams. Denver's Art Shamsky went 3-3 with 3 HRs and 5 RBI on 5/14 in a 7-6 loss to Portland. Shamsky doubled his HR total for the year in that one game. Week 7Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1966/standings.htmlHighlights: The South is beginning to bunch up now as well as the North, all 6 teams separated by only 5 games. Louisville and Tidewater are tied at the top after the Colonels have won 4 straight and the Tides have lost 4 straight. They face off for 2 more games this week and a leader will be determined. The HRs are starting to fly over the last 10 games, Portland's Willie Mays has 7 HRs in his last 28 ABs (12 RBI), Richmond's Roberto Clemente has 6 HRs in his last 37 ABs (13 RBI) and Phoenix's Harmon Killebrew has 6 HRs in his previous 31 ABS (10 RBI). Killebrew now leads all hitters with 19 dingers and Mays leads with 35 RBI. Louisville's Sandy Koufax and Toledo's Juan Marichal both have a chance to reach 10 wins by Memorial Day, each currently have 9 Ws for the two division leaders. Cash's big day was in the middle of a 4 game stretch where he drove in 10 runs. Vancouver has won 17 of their last 23 and has overtaken Toledo in the North, holding a 1 game lead over the Hens and Royals. Montreal is equally hot with a record of 19-8 in May. Louisville's Sandy Koufax has 118 K's and 11 wins so far, on pace for another 300K season and an outside chance at 30 victories. The hottest team in the division is Charleston(8-2 over the last 10, 13-5 over the last 18 with 3 of the losses coming in extra innings) now in a 3 way tie for 2nd with Hawaii and Louisville. The Senators have been under the radar so far thanks to a 2-6 record in extra innings and a 9-16 record in 1 run games. Denver's Manny Mota is leading all batters with a .342 average, .024 above Charleston's Pete Rose in 2nd place. The Senators are getting great performances from a lot of players in their push into the playoff race, Fergie Jenkins tossed a 1 hitter on 6/1 against the Colonels, Tony Conigliaro drove in 7 against the Colonels on 6/3, and Willie Stargell has 14 RBI in his last 37 ABs. The game went 11 innings with the division leading Tides coming out on top in the game of the week on 6/18. Tidewater scored 18 runs in 2 games on 6/17 and 6/18. Vancouver now has the three highest single game run total in the league so far this season. Three batters had 5 hit games this week, Charleston's Pete Rose (vs POR on 6/13), Tidewater's Gene Alley (vs VAN on 6/17) and Vada Pinson (vs VAN on 6/18). All three performances resulted in wins for their teams. Toledo's Juan Marichal pitched the 3rd league wide 1 hitter of the season in a no decision on 6/17 against Louisville. Marichal allowed 2 BBs and 1 hit in 11 innings before being replaced by Bob Miller in the 12th inning. The South leading Tides have scored 379 runs this year, tops in the league. Portland and Vancouver combined for the 3rd highest scoring contest back on 4/12 in an 18-5 win for the Mounties. Sandy Koufax is on pace for 30 wins for the Colonels, notching his 15th this week, with just over half of the season remaining. All Star Game1966 All Star GameHighlights: All Star Game starters Mike Cuellar and Sandy Koufax both lived up to the honor of being named starting pitchers for their division, delivering scoreless baseball for the first 3 innings. The North All Stars broke open the 0-0 tie in the 4th inning, striking first on a 2 run HR by MVP candidate Frank Robinson, and then extending the lead later in the inning to 4-0 on RBI base hits by Manny Mota and Luis Aparacio. The South didn't waver after the big inning by the North, chipping away with runs crossing the plate in 6th and 7th innings to draw to withing a single run. Then in the top of the 8th, the South's Willie McCovey reached base on an error and All Star Game MVP Ron Santo stepped up to the plate and launched the game winning 2 run HR into the bleachers! The North had base-runners in the final two innings but were unable to score the game tying run.
