Phoenix equaled the Hens fast start with a 6-1 week in the South, thanks to a team ERA of 1.88 during the first weeks contests. Tidewater's Catfish Hunter pitched an 11 inning gem, striking out 14 against the Giants only to get a no decision and to watch his relief give up the losing run in the 12th inning on 4/4. Montreal's Frank Howard had 6 RBI thanks to 2 HRs powering the Royals to a 10-1 victory over Denver. Toledo's Bob Gibson is keeping pace with Horlen, with a 3-0 record in his first 3 starts with a 0.78 ERA and 0.74 WHIP. Hawaii's Ernie Banks leads all hitters with 7 HR and 19 RBI. Week 3Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1967/standings.htmlHighlights: Denver and Phoenix battled for 18 innings on 4/19, combining for 4 total runs in a game filled with terrific pitching, each team sending six pitchers to the mound. The 3-1 Denver win is the game of the week. Charleston's Luis Tiant whiffed 13 in 9 2/3 innings in a 4-3 loss to Portland. Big strikeout totals aren't necessarily translating to wins this season so far. Montreal's Rusty Staub has rushed to the top of the batting race, hitting .415 ( an .082 point lead). Staub is 13-22 over his last 5 games to raise his average over the .400 mark. Joe Morgan in a new entry to the stolen base leader spot, with 20 swipes in 20 games for the Colonels. Toledo's Lou Brock will be representing the Hens in the SB race this year is 4 bags behind Morgan. The next day Toledo and Tidewater locked up for a 10 inning contest, combining for 36 runs in a Toledo 21-15 win. Tidewater's Norm Cash has moved into the HR lead, now with 9, and Montreal's Rusty Staub continues his hot hitting, batting .430 through 33 games. Louisville's Cisco Carlos leads all hurlers with 7 wins, followed in second place by his teammate Dick Hughes with 6 victories. Week 7Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1967/standings.htmlHighlights: The three best records in the league are bunched together at the top of the South, Hawaii leading with 29 wins followed at 28 by Charleston and Louisville. Toledo's Tony Perez had a career day at the plate on 5/19, driving in 7 runs against Portland on a Grand Slam and a 3 R HR. It wasn't enough to earn the win thanks to a walk off 2 out HR from Curt Blefary in the bottom of the 9th for the Beavers. Louisville's Mel Queen tossed the 1st 1 hitter of the year against Richmond on 5/20, allowing the only hit in the 3rd inning on the way to a Colonel's 4-0 victory. The 1 hitter came a day after Queen's rotation mate Dick Hughes also stymied the Braves, striking out 15 in a 12 inning complete game 1-0 Louisville win. Week 8Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1967/standings.htmlHighlights: Montreal wins 8 out of 10 and hurdles Toledo for the North lead, in the South, Hawaii builds a 4 game lead over Charleston thanks to a 5 game winning streak. Richmond's Jim Bunning throws the 2nd 1 hitter of the year in a 3-0 win over the Senators on 5/26. Bunning held Charleston hit-less into the 7th inning. Hawaii's Ernie Banks found his HR swing once again, against Louisville on 5/26, smashing 3 HRs and driving in 4 runs in the Islanders 6-2 win. Toledo's Mickey Lolich and Bob Gibson have both surpassed the 100 K mark for the Hens. Lolich has 111 and Gibson has 104. Louisville's Carl Yastrzemski matched Ernie Banks 3 HR performance from last week, knocking a trifecta out of the park on 5/29 against Phoenix in a one-sided 12 - 1 win. Yaz was 3-4 with 4 RBI and 3 RS. Toledo's Lou Brock stole 5 bases against Denver on Memorial Day, in an extra inning 4-3 loss. Brock stole 2nd and 3rd in the same inning twice, and tried for a third time late in the game, finally getting thrown out at 3rd stopping him from reaching a 6 SB day. In the South Charleston falters losing 4 in a row and watches Louisville and Phoenix move by them and Hawaii pull further away in first. In a game of missed opportunities, Phoenix and Charleston combine for 32 hits over 12 innings on 6/8, and are only able to plate 10 runs through 11. We're 10 weeks into the season and Montreal's Rusty Staub is still above the .400 mark, batting .417 with 28 doubles in 216 ABs. Vancouver has it's own 5 game winning streak and is 2 games under .500, 3 games behind 2nd place Toledo in the North. Based on the decade so far, it was only a matter of time until both teams found their way into the playoff races! Denver's Gaylord Perry pitched the 3rd 1 hitter of the season on 6/14, a 1-0 win over Jim Merrit and the Tides. The only run of the game was a HR off of the bat of Jesus Alou in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Tidewater's Hank Aaron has 5 HRs and 12 RBI in his last 34 ABs, putting him atop of both categories for the Tides. Portland's Al Ferrera is red hot for the Beavers, smashing 6 HRs in his last 10 games and pulling into second in the HR race behind Tidewater's Hank Aaron. Vancouver's Frank Robinson launched 3 HRs on 6/19 against Richmond, driving in 4 in a 6-1 win for the Mounties. Robinson's teammate Don Mincher is also swinging the bat well, with hits in 19 consecutive games. All Star Game1967 All Star GameHighlights: 12 pitchers combine to spread out 9 total hits in a terrific exhibition of pitching in the All Star Game. The solitary run of the game was pieced together in the bottom of the 4th thanks to some small ball by some sluggers bats. Hank Aaron led off with a single, followed by a walk by Carl Yastrzemski. Harmon Killebrew then launched a deep fly to the warning track allowing both runners to move up. With 1 out and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Al Kaline was walked after coming in as a pinch hitter loading the bases for Rico Petrocelli. Petrocelli delivered with a sac fly driving in Aaron with the GW run.
