A much closer race for the two playoff positions in the North, with Montreal in 1st and 6 games separating 1st and 4th. Tidewater's Hank Aaron is smashing the ball once again, in his last 34 ABs, Hammerin' Hank has 6 HRs and 12 RBI and is back atop both categories. A number of season milestones are almost in reach as we move into August, including 20 wins, 200 Ks, and 100 RBIs. Charleston's Fergie Jenkins becomes the 5th pitcher to toss a 1 hitter, taking a no hitter into the 8th against Buffalo on 8/13 in a 7-0 win. Jenkins has been up and down all season, putting together a 7 game winning streak, a 5 game losing streak, and allowing 12 hits and 12 runs in 5 innings in the game prior to his 1 hitter. Richmond's Jim Bunning, and Toledo's Mickey Lolich and Bob Gibson reach 200 Ks this week. Bunning leads all of the hurlers with 215. Toledo's Juan Marichal is 8 strikeouts away from a third ace from the Mud Hens staff to whiff 200. Week 20Standings - latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/1960kp/1967/standings.htmlHighlights: Hawaii (8 game winning streak) and Montreal (7-3 in last 10) both push on the gas and pull away in their respective divisions. Hawaii opening up a 4 game lead and Montreal doubling that with an 8 game lead. The race to keep an eye on now is for second in the North where Vancouver, Toledo and Portland are just 2 games apart. The race was even closer before the Beavers suffered a 3 game losing streak to close out the week. It was an interesting week for Portland with 2 extremes, a 17 inning 4-3 loss to Richmond on 8/18, coming on the heels of a 20-7 win over Tidewater on the 17th. The 4-3 loss is this weeks game of the week. Tidewater's Hank Aaron has 9 RBI in his last 4 games and is the first hitter passing the 100 RBI milestone. Montreal's Rusty Staub is beginning to fall back the the pack in the batting race, still hitting an impressive .357, .034 ahead of Richmond's Roberto Clemente. Louisville's Carl Yastrzemski knocked in his 100th RBI this week, and Tidewater's Hank Aaron has reached the 40 HR mark. The tie breaker games are considered regular season games and are scheduled for TUESDAY on the schedule, which is a 1 game rest from the end of the regular season schedule (SUNDAY). Home field is decided by head to head records so in the North Montreal (based on an 11-7 H2H record) will be hosting Vancouver, and Louisville will be making the long flight west to Hawaii (13-5 H2H). The winner of the tie breaker will be the home team in the 7 game divisional series. 1967 is Louisville and Vancouver's 6th consecutive playoff appearance, the Colonels are going for their 3rd title and the Mounties are going for their 2nd. This is Montreal's 2nd playoff appearance in a row and 3rd in total, and congratulations to Hawaii for breaking the seal and going against the decade leaders in the Islanders first appearance. Some of the individual statistical races are still to be decided, but the major categories have clear winners. In the batters box, Montreal's Rusty Staub has a .030+ lead in the batting race and has that locked up, Tidewater's Hank Aaron has the RBI and HR title's secured (135 RBI and 50 HR). In the North, Vancouver traveled to Montreal an got a gem of a game from SP Dean Chance, striking out 10 and spreading out 4 hits in a 2-0 CG victory. The Mounties offense was provided in the top of the 8th off of the bat of Bob Allison, delivering a 2 out 2 RBI double for the only runs of the game, Vancouver 2 - Montreal 0The South had an equally exciting game, with Louisville jumping out to an early 1 run lead on a solo HR by Carl Yastrzemski. The lead was short lived with the Islanders plating 5 runs in the 4th and 5th innings to go ahead for the win. The Colonels had rallies in the 6th and 7th but could bridge the 5 run gap.
