Louisville has a safe 5 game lead in the South, but Phoenix, Richmond, and Tidewater are within a couple games of each other in 2nd-4th. Montreal posted the highest scoring outing on 7/12 against Hawaii, in a 17-6 blowout. The Royals plated the 17 runs on 15 hits and 11 walks, led by Jose Pagan with a grand slam, 4 hits, 2 RS and 5 RBI. Toledo's Mickey Lolich struck out 15 against Louisville in a 2-1 win on 7/11. Lolich out-pitched the Colonels Denny LeMaster in a terrific pitchers duel. Toledo's Juan Marichal is the first pitcher to 15 wins, followed by his teammate Bob Gibson, LeMaster, and LeMaster's rotation mate Tom Seaver, all with 14 wins. Tidewater's Hank Aaron found his swing, smacking 6 HR and driving in 11 in his last 39 ABs. Aaron is leading the 4th place Tides in HRs, RBI and GWRBI. Hawaii's Johnny Bench is beginning to show his 1970's form, hitting 4 HRs and knocking in 10 in his last 40 ABs. Bench is tops in H, HRs, RBI, RS, GWRBI, BB for the struggling Islanders. Richmond's Gaylord Perry is 3-0 in his last 3 starts, all CGs, allowing 13 hits and 3 ERs with 25 Ks over that stretch. Perry leads the 3rd place Braves in wins and strikeouts. Richmond and Phoenix separate from Tidewater in the battle for 2nd in the South, 6 games behind Louisville. The HR and RBI race has tightened up, with any number of hitters in the race to take the crown in those categories. The race isn't as close in the batting title race, Richmond's Roberto Clemente has a .039 point lead over Denver's Cleon Jones. Louisville's Sam McDowell, and Toledo's Bob Gibson and Mickey Lolich all surpassed the 200 strikeout milestone this week. Gibson is also leading the league in wins with 17, tied with Louisville's Denny LeMaster and Gibby's teammate Juan Marichal. Louisville's Denny Lemaster pitched the first no hitter of the season for his 18th win against Charleston on 8/1 in a 5-1 victory for the Colonels. The Senators scratched a run across the plate in the first inning on a walk, wild pitch and 2 ground outs, and then were shut down for the rest of the game. Toledo's Tony Perez is powering the Mud Hens climb to the top, driving in 22 runs from 7/14 to 8/3. Hawaii's Al Kaline has built up a 15 game hitting streak for the Islanders, raising his average to .284. The Syracuse Chiefs are readying his locker for the 1970 season! Also this week, his Mud Hens teammate Tony Perez becomes the first batter to reach 100 RBI. In some secondary stats, Louisville leads all teams with 12 grand slams ( Boog Powell has 3) and 27 clutch HRs. Final StandingsStandings - stratomaticnation.com/sombb/1960kp/1969/standings.htmlHighlights: Congratulations to the playoff teams: North (1) Denver (2) Toledo South (1) Louisville (2) Tidewater Denver finishes up the clear leader in the North, Toledo facing a tough 10 game losing streak to rebound from. The teams split their season series 9-9, heading into a matchup that will very likely be dominated by pitching. Denver is going for their 3rd title, with the first coming in 1960 and 61. This is Toledo's 4th post season, the Hens are still searching for their 1st championship. In the South, Louisville reached 100 wins for the 2nd time, winning their 6th pennant and finishing the decade with 8 consecutive playoff appearances. The Colonels held a 10-8 season advantage over Tidewater, so the Tides have a fair chance at the upset. This is Tidewater's 4th post season, they are going for thier 2nd title. In individual performances, Louisville's Denny Lemaster and Sam McDowell finished 1-2 in wins, 26 and 25 respectively. McDowell led all pitchers with 341 strikeouts and 6 shut outs. Denver's Larry Dierker and Andy Messersmith were tops in ERA, almost in a dead heat with Dierker recording a 2.76 ERA and Messersmith a 2.78. At the plate, Richmond's Roberto Clemente took the batting title with a .342 AVG, Toledo's Dick Allen smashed 55 HRs, and Louisville's Reggie Jackson led in RBI with 136.
