Lot's of free baseball this week, 8 extra inning games, the longest coming on opening day, a 17 inning contest between Buffalo and Portland ending with a walkoff triple from Bill Freehan to deliver the win for Portland. Buffalo's Jim Ray Hart is off to a great start, logging at least 1 hit in all 7 games and knocking a league high 4 HRs. Buffalo fired on all cylinders on 4/15 blowing out Toledo 12-0. Barry Bonds drove in 6 runs on 2 for 3 from with plate with 2 HRs in the win. Denver's Cesar Tovar stole 3 bases, also on tax day, in a 2-1 victory over Vancouver. The key SB came in the bottom of the 10th after a 1 out walk, after Tovar moved to second with the steal, Many Mota drove him home with the game winning base hit. Week 4Standings - stratomaticnation.com/sombb/1960kp/1968/standings.htmlHighlights: Montreal, Buffalo and Richmond are all tied with 16 wins. Only 3 games separate 1st and last in the South. Toledo's Dick Allen crushed 3 HRs in 4 ABs vs Louisville on 4/24 in an 8-2 win for the Hens. Allen drove in 1/2 of Toledo's runs on the day, and leads all hitters with 11 dingers. Montreal's Tom Murphy is off to a great start, tops in the league with 6 wins and an 0.87 ERA in 52 IPs. Toledo's Tommy Helms is batting .391 in 92 ABs, .049 points higher than Charleston's Pete Rose in 2nd place. Week 5Standings - stratomaticnation.com/sombb/1960kp/1968/standings.htmlHighlights: Charleston's Luis Tiant is missing bats on a regular basis, leading all hurlers with 80 Ks. To add to his total, Tiant recorded 8 Ks in an 18 inning game against Montreal on 4/30, a Senator 5-2 win. The game is the longest contest of the season so far. Vancouver's Blue Moon Odom tossed the first 1 hitter of the season, a 2-0 win versus Hawaii. The only hit allowed was a harmless 4th inning single by Johnny Bench. Tidewater's Norm Cash is on a roll, batting .448 with 4 HR and 14 RBI in his last 29 ABs. Cash is now 3rd in HRs and RBI. Week 6Standings - stratomaticnation.com/sombb/1960kp/1968/standings.htmlHighlights: Portland climbs into 1st place in the North, winning 12 of 14 and their last 7, opening up a 1 game lead over Montreal and a 3 game lead over Buffalo. Toledo's Juan Marichal pitched a 1 hitter against Montreal on 5/10, pitching 6 2/3 of no hit ball until Tom Satriano laced a clean base hit. The Hens earned the 4-0 victory and are fighting to get back to .500. Tidewater's Willie Horton is knocking the cover off the ball as of late, smashing 7 HRs and 15 RBI in his last 36 ABs. Horton is now tied with Toledo's Dick Allen in HRs (16) and second in RBI behind Louisville's Tony Oliva. The race in the South stays close, 8 games separate 1st and last. Two great performances on the mound this week, Montreal's Stan Bahnsen on 5/23 and Phoenix's John Hiller on 5/26. The Royals beat Denver 1-0 in Bahnsen's gem, with Frank Howard driving in the only run of the game. In Hiller's outing against Louisville, the Giants bats provided more breathing room on the way to a 9-0 win. Week 9Standings - stratomaticnation.com/sombb/1960kp/1968/standings.htmlHighlights: Buffalo, Louisville and Montreal are all 8-2 in their last 10, and are at the top of their respective divisions. Hawaii and Tidewater opened up the Memorial Day weekend with a terrific 17 inning game, ending with a solo walk-off HR by the Tides Norm Cash. Cash is now 3rd in HRs with 17, and 4th in RBI with 41. Hawaii's Ernie Banks put on a show on Memorial Day, crushing 3 HRs and driving in 9 for the Islanders against the Tides.
